The original T-Patch was a meager mimeo, a news sheet born during the Carolina Maneuvers of 1942, to comply with VI Corps' request for a Public Relations Section.
With the assistance from the 45th Division News, arrangements were finally made in Naples, only to be canceled by the 36th amphibious move to Anzio.
Subsequent issues were published at Geislingen, staffed partly by ex-members of the 63rd Division who filled gaps left by 36thers who had already returned home, until the division returned to the states in November 1945 for deactivation.

On 1 May 2004, the 49th Armored Division of the Texas Army National Guard was officially inactivated and the 36th Brigade of the 49th Armored Division was redesignated the 36th Infantry Division.

The 36th Division was born with the mobilization of the Texas and Oklahoma National Guard for World War I in 1917.
The Division formed at Camp Bowie in Fort Worth and fought in the Meuse-Argonne offensive in France in the “Great War.” Highlighting this exhibit is a diorama of the Battle of St. Entienne in France in 1918 in which the 36th Division played a major role.

The British 36th (Ulster) Division was a New Army division formed in September 1914.
Originally called the Ulster Division, it was made up of members of the Ulster Volunteer Force who formed 13 additional battalions for three existing Irish regiments; the Royal Irish Fusiliers, the Royal Irish Rifles and the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.
Between November 1915 and February 1916 the brigade swapped with the 12th Brigade from the 4th Division.

The relief of the 2d Division was begun by the 36th Division on the night of October 6-7, but this was not completed until the 10th, the 2d Division troops that were not relieved continuing to operate with the 36th until withdrawn.

In September 1914, the Ulster Division was formed from the Ulster Volunteer Force which raised thirteen battalions for the three Irish regiments based in Ulster; the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, the Royal Irish Fusiliers and the Royal Irish Rifles.
It was in X Corps, with 32nd Division - a New Army formation - on its right facing the height around the immensely fortified position of Thiepval, and the regular army 29th Division, recently arrived from Gallipoli, facing Beaumont Hamel on the other bank of the Ancre.
The Second Army, of which the Ulster Division was currently a part, arranged for two overwhelming advantages in the attack, the purpose of which was to capture the long ridge running south from Ypres to Armentieres, through the villages of Wytschaete and Messines.

Of the regular army, the 29th Division, including the 1st Battalions of the Royal Dublin, Munster and Inniskilling Fusiliers, was selected for the offensive.

The day after the British assault ended, the U.S. 36th Infantry Division was to cross the Rapido River in the vicinity of Sant' Angelo, a village atop a 40-foot bluff on the main line of resistance defended by the numerically superior 15th Panzer Grenadier Division, considered one of the best German units in Italy.
Making matters more difficult, the assaulting units of the 36th Division were below strength by as much as 500 men per regiment and contained many unassimilated replacements and undertrained small-unit leaders who had only recently arrived to fill the gaps left by the heavy losses suffered in the recent battles for the Bernhard Line.
The division was attached to the newly created Fifth Army, but did not see any action during the closing months of the North African campaign or in Sicily in July.

The experiences of the SSS detachment working with the 36th Division comprised two very different phases--the period prior to the crossing of the Moselle River on September 21 and the period of the advance from the Moselle to the Meurthe River.
