(3834) Zappafrank is in a 4.08-year elliptical orbit around the sun ranging in distance from 309.1 million km (at perihelion, closest point to the sun) to 454.9 million km (at aphelion, furthest point from the sun).
The perihelion point of the minor planet's orbit is at the end of the white straight line through the sun indicated by "P".
Two CCD images (102 K) of Zappafrank, showing its motion over a period of about an hour on 1996 Mar. 10, are available.

It was felt that No. 3834 was an ideal choice, having been discovered by a Czech scientist, since FZ had been an icon of freedom to the people of that country in the period prior to 1989.
Zappafrank, the Planet Zappa, is not a large world: although its precise size is not known, it is thought to be 6 - 13 km across.
Zappafrank is not one of these, so, who knows, it may even outlast the human race.

(3834) Zappafrank was discovered by L. Brozek on May 11 1980 and named in honor of Frank Zappa.
The two images on the right were taken on March 10 1996 by D. di Cicco and show the relative motion of Zappafrank over a period of one hour.
(3834) Zappafrank is one of the Rock & Roll Minor Planets.

Take a look at starchart #1 (gzipped PostScript, 21k) and starchart #2 (gzipped PostScript, 31k) which plot the track of the minor planet (or asteroid), Zappafrank (#3834, 1980 JE), from mid-1994 to mid-1995.
To see Zappafrank you'll need to use a telescope or large binoculars under a dark sky, away from city lights.
If you look again after a period of a few days, the "star" that has moved will be the minor planet.

Seems like they kept this system for historical reasons, starting from A, B, C and instead of switching over to a pure numbering system as you suggested.
After a while the IAU will give these objects regular names that consist of a number and a name....such as (3834) ZappaFrank or (9007) JamesBond.
