Performance Comparison Intel 386DX, Intel RapidCAD, C&T 38600DX, Cyrix 486DLC This document, containing descriptions and a benchmark comparison of the Intel 386DX, Intel RapidCAD, C&T 38600DX, and the Cyrix 486DLC has been put together for the benefit of the net.community.
To software, it appears to be a 386DX with a math coprocessor, as the 486-specific instructions have been removed from its instruction set.
Since the 486 machine was configured with a different hard disk than the 386 system, and the compilers and tools installed on the 386 machine were not present, the MAKE benchmarks could unfortunately not be included in the tests.

386 DX / Freq   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
386DX is proclaimed as the world's first Cyberpunk Rock Band; what it really is is an ancient Wintel box playing MIDI files complete with song-synth software vocals.
On one level, this is really a work about the technology of reproducing art in the age of digital reproduction, or circa 1990 given the age of the machine involved.
The Best Of 386DX is funny, it is entertaining, and the 386DX website is worth checking out too.

sonomu: 386 DX : The Best Of   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
386DX is the pseudonym of one man, Russian 'non-artist' Alexei Shulgin.
As the band name suggests, his creative tool is a decade-old 386DX, equipped with multimedia speakers, an early general MIDI soundcard, and Creative Labs' TextAssist, a speech synthesiser of limited utility.
'386DX : The Best Of' compiles 15 such tunes, complete with a selection of multimedia tools which I couldn't get to work, and a short video for 'California Dreaming' in which lots of pedestrians look bemused as Shulgin's 386 busks on the streets, protected from the elements by an umbrella taped to the monitor.

Just Too Good - Darren's IT / Hardware Technical Reference   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
The data bus and address bus widths were both increased to 32 bits, allowing a memory fetch of four bytes at a time, and permitting access to huge 4Gb of memory.
The 386DX significantly outperformed the 286, partially through increased clockspeeds (25 and 33MHz versions of the 386DX were common), but also through introduction of a pipelined architecture; the 386DX pipeline was 4 steps deep.
No longer was it so important to have a branded 'box', as people began to realise that it was the combination of components inside the box that mattered, not the label on the front.

The 386DX Microprocessor is an advanced 32-bit microprocessor designed for applications needing very high performance and optimized for multitasking systems.
In addition, the 386DX Microprocessor allows the simultaneous running of multiple operating systems.
Object-code compatibility with all 8086 family members (8088, 80186, 80188, 80286) means the 386DX Microprocessor offers immediate access to the world's largest microprocessor software base.

They are hopelessly off the performance pace now, of course, and unable to run any present-day software, but they were very competitive in their time and to this day remain the simplest, most fuss-free boards we ever worked with.
Because the 386DX had 32-bit RAM addressing and 30-pin SIMMs were 8 bits wide, you had to fit four SIMMs at a time (not two, which you could do with a 386SX or 286).
Clockwise from bottom left: a large empty socket; the 486DLC (you could put a 386DX there instead if desired); the 496SLC chip itself; and two sets of silver pads for factory mounting of a PQFP (surface mounted) CPU, which could be either 386DX (the small inner set of pads) or 486SX.

386DX has 32-bit registers and address sizes which allows it to address 4GB per segment.
As 4GB address space is large enough for most applications, a flat memory model (one segment only) is used for native Linux and Win32 applications.
Stripped down versions of Windows and Linux are available to minimize memory requirements.

80386DX more commonly known as the 386DX processor was developed by Intel Corp. beginning in 1985 commonly called the 386DX featuring 32-bit architecture including built in multitasking and was available in clock speeds of 16MHz, 20MHz, 25MHz, and 33MHz.
80386SL more commonly known as the 386SL was a version of Intel Corp.'s 386DX microprocessor first manufactured in 1990 featuring low power consumption and was used mainly in portable computers.

The 386DX was a bit expensive, so Intel did as they'd done with the 8086 and 8088.
So it still had protected mode and all the other 386DX advantages except it was a bit slower with disk/memory/board IO (input/output).
The 386DX used 5 volts - the 386SL was happy with 3.3 volts.

For example, both the 386SX and 386DX have internal 32-bit registers, but the 386SX has to "inhale" twice (figuratively) to fill them, whereas the 386DX can do the job in one "breath." The same thing would happen when the data is passed from the registers back out to the system bus.
The 386DX chip was the first of the 386-family members that Intel introduced.
But the Pentium expands the data bus to 64 bits, which means that it can move twice as much data into or out of the CPU compared with a 486 of the same clock speed.
