Interstate 395 in Virginia is the 9.67-mile-long expressway from the I-95/I-495 Capital Beltway interchange in Fairfax County at Springfield, through Alexandria and Arlington to the District of Columbia border (Potomac River).
The terrain that I-395 in Virginia crosses is gently rolling, and the highway serves the city and towns of Alexandria and Springfield, and the counties of Arlington and Fairfax.
I-95 in Virginia inside the I-495 Capital Beltway was redesignated as I-395 in 1977 because of the rerouting of I-95 to the eastern half of the Capital Beltway.

US 395 followed what is now Pomerado Road from a point 3 miles north of the I-15/Route 163 interchange to the interchange of Pomerado Road/I-15 at a point just south of the Lake Hodges / San Dieguito River crossing near the southern city limits of Escondido.
Note that, until 1950, US 395 was routed along the route of present-day I-15 from Temecula to the junction with present-day Route 74, then along present-day Route 74 to "D" Street in Perris, and then up "D" Street along present-day I-215.
This was signed as US 395, and was LRN 29, defined in 1919, from the Nevada state line northwest of Reno to Route 36 near Johnstonville.

U.S. 395 is a major north-south route that traces the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada and Cascade Mountains for its journey through California and Nevada.

In 1966 US 395 was upgraded to full freeway between Miramar NAS and the southern city limits of Escondido, just north of the Lake Hodges bridge.
This has significance since this freeway was built as US 395 after the 1964 renumbering and was not at the time considered a future upgrade to an Interstate highway.

US 395 was an original 1926 route, and ever since then its north end has been at Laurier - which is not so much a town as it is a port of entry.
But in 1934, US 395 was extended south from Spokane, all the way down to San Diego CA, increasing the length of the route to nearly 1500 miles.
Apparently the south end was truncated in about 1972; US 395 now ends at I-15 on the outskirts of Hesperia.
