From 278 to 275 BC he fought under Pyrrhus, king of Epirus, against the Roman invaders of Sicily, and after the departure of Pyrrhus in 275 BC he was chosen commander of the Syracusan army.
On the death of Alexander in 323 BC, his empire was divided among the Diadochi (successors) by the imperial regent Perdiccas and Ptolemy was appointed satrap of Egypt and Libya.

In 394 BC they had also conquered the menacing Etruscan neighbour of Veii: the Etruscan power was now limited to Etruria itself, and Rome could therefore emerge as the dominant city in Latium.
