As the scheduling authority for the Yuma Training Range Complex, MCAS Yuma provides fleet squadrons access to 10,000 square miles of special-use airspace designated for military aviation training and almost 2,000 square miles of underlying land reserved as aerial bombing and gunnery ranges.
When the United States entered World War II, an air base was erected with the astounding speed which characterized the war effort and by early 1943, Yuma Army Air Base began graduating classes of pilots.
Its primary mission is to support aerial weapons training for the Atlantic and Pacific Fleet Marine Forces and Navy, and to serve as a base of operations for Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron-1, and Third MAW units, to include Marine Aircraft Group-13.

On my drive from San Diego to the Yuma air show I saw them practicing way off in the distance.
The picture stinks because I was travelling at Mach 0.10 at FL0 on the I-8, and didn't dare look through the camera viewfinder while driving.

When HML-267 returned to Camp Pendleton from the Yuma deployment on October 1, 1971, their nine OV-10s transferred to VMO-2 and thus 267 became a UH-1 only squadron.
With the addition of officers and staff assigned to HML-267, VMO-2 was reorganized from cadre status (that means that there were some people to take care of the equipment and records but they had no aircraft to operate) to active status on September 30, 1971 at MCALF Camp Pendleton.

ABOARD USS BONHOMME RICHARD (NNS) -- USS Bonhomme Richard embarked AV-8B Harriers from Aug. 10-13 for the second time since serving as one of two harrier carriers during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Bonhomme Richard is currently in the Advanced Phase of its training cycle and is scheduled to deploy as the flag ship for Expeditionary Group 5 later this year.
