  NationMaster - Encyclopedia: 3AK
Many radio historians believe that that Akron and the Postmaster General's Department had originally discussed the issuance of such a license, and that the B Class license issued to Akron, with a number of restrictions, was issued in its place.
In the 1950's 3AK went from an overnight station to a daytime station, restricting itself to close transmission in the early evening as it was discovered that 3AK's signal, on the same frequency as a NSW regional station 2BS Bathurst, was causing interference.
In January 2004, 3AK became known on-air as SEN 1116 and as of April 2004 the new format had already managed to lift 3AK's profile and ratings.

 3AK looks for new owner - www.theage.com.au
Talk radio station 3AK is up for sale after its owners, the stock exchange-listed company Data & Commerce, last night decided to quit the loss-making broadcaster.
Data & Commerce's 3AK and 3MP stations lost a collective $2.8 million, before tax, in the company's latest financial year, although 3MP has been "recording small operating profits", the company said last night.
Since it bought into 3AK in early 2001, Data & Commerce touted the station as a potential challenger to the stranglehold on Melbourne's talkback scene by 3AW and 3LO.

ABA | News & publications > News releases > News release archive > 2001   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
3AK is expected to cease operation on its previous frequency of 1503 kHz by 24 July 2001.
At that time the ABA determined that the commercial radio service 3AK would change frequency from 1503 kHz and be licensed to operate on 1116 kHz from Lower Plenty with a maximum CMF of 1245 kV which is equivalent to a transmission power of 5 kW (directional).
In particular, it was held that the ABA had not consulted widely enough on the proposal to transfer commercial broadcaster 3AK to radiofrequency 1116 kHz and to subsequently make 3AK's existing frequency of 1503 kHz available for a community radio service.

Grantley (who is visually impaired) recently explained to media writer Ash Long (who wrote a comprehensive history of 3AK) that station manager-of-the-day Nigel Dick originally recruited him as a 16-year-old in 1963 in an effort to score publicity for the station.
His 3AK career slowed down somewhat during this year, after he was signed to EMI's subsidiary label HMV, for whom he recorded five singles, an EP and an LP.
At the end of 1968 3AK announced that it would be expanding to 24-hour operation after years of restricted-hours broadcasting (for most of the 60s the station went off air at 5pm) and it was announced that Grantley would host the station’s first all-night shift.

A second radio opportunity presented itself for Bill, and it was back to the country and 3BA Ballarat for two years where he worked on-air and became a member of the "3BA Players", a local theatre group which also made radio plays.
At that time 3AK only broadcast during the day (because it shared a frequency with an interstate station which drowned it out at night), but the station adopted a Top 40 format, called its on-air DJ team "The Good Guys", and started to make an impact.
Eventually 3AK won the right to broadcast 24 hours per day, and Bill was to spend 23 consecutive years with the station as announcer and programme director - including the halcyon days in the 1970's when 3AK rated #1 with its "Beautiful Music" format.
