Fixed Frequency FAQ --How does a 3D graphics accelerator work? -- MonitorWorld.com
The way that 3D objects are traditionally represented is using a meshwork of polygons - usually triangles - to describe their outside surface.
This process is called rendering, and involves equations for tracing from the viewer through the scene, equations for determining how light is reflected from light sources, off of objects and back to the viewer, and algorithms for determining which objects in the scene are visible, and which are obscured.
However, most of the 3D video hardware is proprietary, which means that without a driver, an application developer would have to write a version of their program for each 3D graphics card available.

Graphics processing unit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the early and mid-1990s, CPU-assisted real-time 3D graphics were becoming increasingly common in computer and console games, which lead to an increasing public demand for hardware-accelerated 3D graphics.
Initially, performance 3D graphics were possible only with separate add-on boards dedicated to accelerating 3D functions (and lacking 2D GUI acceleration entirely) such as the 3dfx Voodoo.
They were initially used to accelerate the memory-intensive work of texture mapping and rendering polygons, later adding units to accelerate geometric calculations such as translating vertices into different coordinate systems.

 messiahorchestra.com (3D Accelerator Card Technology)
3D graphics processing begins with 3D physical modeling and geometry transformations, lighting, and clipping, which are floating-point intensive.
Today's graphics accelerators are now so fast that the CPU cannot always provide data fast enough to keep up.
Overall 3D graphics performance is thus often limited by the floating-point calculation speed of the CPU at the beginning of the graphics pipeline.

HP CCN - Sepia: scalable 3D compositing using PCI Pamette white paper
When a 3D image is to be computed, the task is spread on all the rendering nodes, each of them computing a sub-set of the problem.
In the case of 3D rendering, the 3D accelerator will always be more cost-efficient than the FPGA for the functions supported by the hardware.
In the face of a large number of unknowns (3D accelerator performance and control, Colorado 2 interfacing and performance), the FPGA solution is flexible enough to adapt to all the potential optimizations or problem solutions.

 Graphics Accelerators
One reason the accelerator can be more efficient than the CPU is because it lives closer to the graphics memory; it does not have to transfer raw pixel data over a slow (relative to the speed of the graphics RAM) general BUS and chipset.
One of the bottlenecks of the earlier graphics accelerators was that the queue would often be too small (typically 16 entries, as is the case of the original ATI Mach 64) to give the host and the graphics accelerator sufficient opportunity for parallelism.
In a typical situation, many accelerator based operations may be pending or in mid-flight, but all of a sudden, host PCI based requests are issued, which necessarily causes the accelerator to suspend its operation and to flush out the internal graphics memory arbiter (PCI transactions must take precendence over other device memory access).

What is a 3D Accelerator?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
While the Accelerator is readily able to process 64 or 128-bit data at a time, regular central processors must take it slower and only go through 32-bits in the same amount of time.
Because an Accelerator is purchased to boost the speed of its function, this processing time is often compared to the output given from the original processor within the computer.
Without a three-dimensional accelerator, people will also face the problem of slower processing times for the rest of their computer's tasks, as the central processor attempts to deal with creating 3D images.

Traditionally, 3D graphics were created by drawing large numbers of successive polygons using the CPU, which resulted in a tradeoff between detailed graphics and speed of interactivity.

A 3D accelerator is laid out on a printed circuit board (PCB), which has multiple layers--typically four to six--depending on the requirements for the particular product.
The data is typically sent to the 3D accelerator across a dedicated point-to-point interface.
If new texture data were being sent to the 3D card across the PCI bus for every frame that a 3D accelerator was rendering in a scene, for example, the texture data per frame would need to average just shy of 2MB in size to render at 60fps, which would max out PCI bandwidth.
