3D swingometer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 3D swingometer is a graphic device used to illustrate the shift in election results from the previous election in a three-party system.
It is similar to the '2D' swingometer used in two-party system elections, but uses the extra dimension to allow swings to occur between three parties.
Where there are swings directly from one party to a second party with the third party's vote remaining unchanged, the 3D swingometer clearly indicates that the third party also benefits slightly from the reduction in vote of the first party.

Swingometer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The swingometer is a graphic device used to illustrate the shift in election results from the previous election.
The swingometer started off in the 1959 general election as simply a piece of cardboard, but for the 2005 election became an example of technical wizardry, apparently floating in mid air.
The swingometer, by its nature, is best suited to two-party systems and can produce a bias against a mainstream third party because of the over-simplification it appears to show.

Peter Snow is as synonymous with general elections as politicians kissing babies, bold promises and the red, blue and yellow fluttering of rosettes.
Technology has come on a long way since the days of the cardboard swingometers and the graphics are now a virtual world which Peter cannot see, created by a Spanish company who "makes leaps forward" each time.
I have got not one, but three swingometers and several other graphics which I am sure will be fun on the night.

 The Creation Engine: Election Special
I remember Second Life being awash with US politics during the presidential campaign last year, so when I saw the UK general election coverage starting on the BBC last night I thought I'd pop in to SL to see if anything was going on.
Every time a general election is held in the UK the BBC turn it in to a festival of light by swathing their coverage in bonkers computer graphics explained by the hyperactive legend Peter Snow who dances around getting far too excited about the statistical minutiae of swings and forecasts and marginals.
With our work done we sat on the 3D bars and rode them in to the sky as the results came in, or stayed pretty close to the ground in my case.

It involved news presenter Dermot Murnaghan doing his stuff from within a series of virtual sets, one of which was a virtual House of Commons which ITN's graphics crew spent an age ensuring was as accurate a reflection of the real thing as possible.
The BBC's virtual studio scoop was to use the technology to turn Peter Snow's swingometer into another virtual House of Commons - a full 3D affair which revolved in front of him in the best development yet of the Snow sandpit.
What the BBC virtual studio department under Danny Popkin did was to develop a system where the 3D virtual House of Commons was projected on to the table set in front of Snow as a 2D image.

This is a fantastic golf game which is very easy to play, adopting the typical swingometer bar for speed/shot position.
The controls couldnt be simpler enough - Up and Down chooses the club, left and right fairly obvious, button A sets off the swingometer and B and C are the slic of the ball.
Throughout the game, there is occasionally a contest which you participate in such as Longest Drive Contest where whoever hits the ball from the Tee the furthest, is the winner, and also Closest To The Pin Contest which is self explanatory.

Initally the swingometer was a physical device, but computer graphics are now used.
It is essentially a harmless device used to fill long periods between results and appears to be largely discarded once sufficient results have been announced in favour of more sophisticated analysis.

Peter is exactly as you would expect from his Swingometer nights - alert, enthusiastic, endlessly fascinated and always upbeat, even about his failed marriage to first wife Alison.

There has been a long running battle for graphics supremacy between the BBC news and ITN ever since the swingometer was introduced.
The ITN graphic’s team had used a partial VR set in the 1997 election, this was a rudimentary system by today's standards and did not allow the camera to move and track the background at the same time.
Today ITN have a system developed by VIZ, not related to the comic but in some ways funnier, that allows the camera to move anywhere left, right, up, down, zoom in and zoom out pull focus in space and the 3D graphics background will track with it.
