3dfx - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
3dfx sued Sega for breach of contract when the Katana was chosen, accusing Sega of starting the deal in bad faith to take 3dfx technology, and eventually the case was settled out of court; but the failure of the Blackbelt was 3dfx's own doing.
In early 1998, 3dfx embarked on its "Rampage" development project, which was to be a new graphics card that would take two years to develop, and would supposedly be several years ahead of the competition once it debuted.
3dfx executed a major strategy change just prior to the launch of Voodoo3 by purchasing STB Systems, which was one of the larger graphics card manufacturers at the time; the intent was for 3dfx to start manufacturing, marketing, and selling its own graphics cards, rather than functioning only as an OEM supplier.

The "Rampage" project, which 3Dfx put much effort into but never was able to bring to market, is said to have been technologically several years ahead of the competition.

Had 3dfx hit their original target release of Fall 1999, the Voodoo5 would be competing with the GeForce SDR and GeForce DDR.
In terms of features, 3dfx wouldn't be hurting nearly as bad as they would be the only one with a reasonable FSAA implementation since the GeForce 256 is simply not powerful enough to perform FSAA at playable frame rates in most games.

Accelerate Your Macintosh! TechWorks Power3D 3Dfx Video card Preview
As an owner of a PC version 3Dfx Voodoo 3D Chipset card since it was introduced last fall, I was very excited about the card finally being made available in a Macintosh version.
3Dfx later developed the Voodoo Rush chipset, which although lacking in any 2D capabilities, does allow 3D in a window, as is used on several 2d/3d single card solutions on the PC.
The upside of the PC cards is that they seem to be able to drive a 2nd monitor with no 2d passthrough (eliminating the issues cited with the Techworks cable/adapter), whereas one reader posted at my forum that the Power3d card did not work this way (makes no sense).

Paul: Most of the core 3dfx routines are written in assembly, to get the maximum performance possible, but the rest of the driver was written in C. As far as I know, only the most commonly called code segments were in assembly, as it would take too long to write the entire driver like this.
