3rd Generation Partnership Project 2 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 3rd Generation Partnership Project 2 (3GPP2) is a collaboration agreement that was established in December 1998.
The scope of 3GPP2 is to make a globally applicable third generation (3G) mobile phone system specification within the scope of the ITU's IMT-2000 project.
In practice, 3GPP2 is the standardization group for CDMA2000, the set of 3G standards based on earlier 2G CDMA technology.

However, while this document recognizes the importance of 3GPP2 interoperability with the existing Internet and hence the use of IETF standards, 3GPP2 recognizes that additions or modifications might be needed in order to make the IETF internet specification fulfill the needs of 3GPP2.
In such cases, 3GPP2 will take its concerns directly to the appropriate IETF working groups for resolution, or to an appropriate Area Director if no appropriate working group can be found.
The role of the 3GPP2 Liaison is to act as an initial contact point in IETF for administrative aspects of this collaboration that cannot easily be handled in other ways (e.g., at a technical level by interactions with IETF Working Groups or Area Directors).

In provision of mobility for IP sessions, the 3GPP and 3GPP2 architectures are different because of the underlying base networks and evolution strategies.
In the 3GPP2 architecture, the registration and authentication for access and data networks are performed separately.

Jonsson added that 3GPP2 also would like to see maximum reuse from the 0-byte scheme in their own Hybrid scheme, so it might be seen as a requirement that 0-byte does not prevent this.
It was pointed out that, to meet a 3GPP2 deadline in September 2001, requirements would have to be nailed down before summer and a finished spec would be needed before the I-D deadline in July.
Bormann noted that this was an accelerated schedule, as one would normally expect to work a year on such a proposal.

At a minimum, the proposed option will benefit 3GPP2 in the case where the RADIUS and DHCP service are all under the same domain.
On the other hand, there are also additional needs in 3GPP2 where the PDSN has to act as a relay-agent instead.
Such dual role of PDSN is unnecessary and not desirable because it forces the Mobile to issue multiple separate requests for different set of parameters, to be answered by different DHCP servers.

Nokia’s IMS pilot system supports both 3GPP2 and 3GPP air interfaces, and is an extension of services first demonstrated by Nokia in February 2002 at the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes.
The demonstration is a major milestone in the ongoing efforts to achieve mobility services convergence between 3GPP and 3GPP2 based networks.
Nokia is actively participating in 3GPP and 3GPP2 to further these efforts, and this demonstration reinforces the key role of the IMS in achieving services convergence.

There are signs that the 3GPP and 3GPP2 families are willing to work together on some major issues, as both have accepted an authentication method, known as AKA.
The use of common authentication standards is very important, because without it carriers have a choice of very insecure cross-technology roaming or very expensive cross-technology roaming (due to the need to maintain individual subscriber records wherever protocol interworking is performed).
Both 3GPP and 3GPP2 are investigating “All IP” systems, where the many fractured protocols of 2G systems (radically different standards for radio interfaces, “A” interfaces, wireless network interfaces and PSTN interfaces) will be replaced by end-to-end IP protocols.
