U.S. 3rd Armored Division - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 3rd Armored Division —nicknamed the Spearhead— was an armored division of the United States Army.
The Division was first activated in 1941, and was a key participant in the European Theatre of World War II, the division was stationed in Germany for much of the Cold War, and participated in the Persian Gulf War.
The 3rd Armored's primary mission during this period was, in the event of War, to defend the Fulda Gap against numerically superior Warsaw Pact forces alongside other NATO elements.

 3rd Armored Division patch
The U.S. 3rd Armored division was activated during WW2 in April 1941 combining the forces of tanks, infantry and artillery under the command of a single U.S. Army commanding general.
The excellent combat record of the division and the fact that the 3rd Armored was often used at the sharp end in battle soon earned the division the name of SpearHead as depicted on the divisions patches and badges.
During this period the division saw service during the first Gulf War of the early 1990s and was often deployed in the then West Germany during the cold war standoff that threatened Europe and everywhere else for the main part of the later 20th century.

The patch on the left is a plain armored force patch that has had the numeral 3 applied, clumsily, in fl ink.
