Military forces were last used to fight fires in 1996, and 3rd Battalion, 16th Field Artillery Regiment deployed once before, in 1994.
Bob Cone, commander of the 4th Infantry Division's 2nd Brigade Combat Team, of which 3rd Battalion, 16th Field Artillery is a part, said despite the dramatic change of mission, the soldiers have risen to the occasion.

The 1st Battalion, 321st Field Artillery, 18th Airborne Corps, Fort Bragg, N.C., is scheduled to deploy about 500 soldiers Monday, Aug. 28, to Kalispell, Mont., and will proceed to battle wild fires in the Kootenai National Forest.
The Army's 3rd Battalion, 16th Field Artillery, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas, is already deployed to the Burgdorf Junction Fire on the Payette National Forest near McCall, Idaho, while the 20th Engineer Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, also from Fort Hood, are engaged with the Nine-Mile fire near Huson, Mont.
Another 500-plus Marines from the 3d Battalion, 2d Marines, Camp Lejeune, N.C., are scheduled also to join the operations in Kootenai National Forest, Mont. This is the second Marine Battalion and is being used to replace the first Marine battalion sent to fight fires.

The soldiers of Charlie Battery, 3rd Battalion, 16th Field Artillery – now participating in the ongoing Division Capstone Exercise – are experts when it comes to engaging enemy targets at massive distances, clearing the path for maneuver units of the 4th Infantry Division.
There were restrictions during past National Training Center rotations as to how much damage field artillery could inflict on the enemy in order to give the maneuvering units more of a fight, but this time it's different.
In the past, with older field artillery vehicles, the vehicle would have to be staked down or stabilized before firing, but that is no longer necessary with the Paladin.
