3rd Generation Partnership Project 2 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The scope of 3GPP2 is to make a globally applicable third generation (3G) mobile phone system specification within the scope of the ITU's IMT-2000 project.
In practice, 3GPP2 is the standardization group for CDMA2000, the set of 3G standards based on earlier 2G CDMA technology.
Note that 3GPP2 should not be confused with 3GPP, which specifies standards for another 3G technology known as W-CDMA (UMTS).

These SDOs have agreed to cooperate in the preparation of globally applicable technical specifications for 3rd Generation Mobile Systems based on the evolved ANSI-41 core networks and the relevant radio access technologies to be transposed by the standardization bodies into appropriate deliverables (e.g., standards).
This partnership project -- 3GPP2 -- was launched in January 1999 in Vancouver, British Columbia and has a Partners Group, a Steering Committee, and six Technical Specification Groups (TSGs) where individual company members develop the specifications.
The SDOs have agreed that ITU is preeminent for international telecommunications standardization, and it has been agreed with the ITU that results of the partnership's work will form the basis of contributions to the ITU in accordance with existing procedures in each country.

Experts Meet to Harmonize Mobile High-Speed Packet Data   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-11)
The radio access technologies being defined by the two projects differ considerably, although meetings between the groups during 1999 have ensured a basis for interoperability between systems using the different technologies, as well as for dual mode terminals that will allow users to roam between such systems.
It was also accepted that, since the two projects work somewhat differently, the task should start with small, achievable objectives that will build over time as the working relationship gets stronger.
Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) was established for the preparation and maintenance of a complete set of globally applicable technical specifications for a Third Generation mobile system based on the evolved GSM core networks and the radio access technologies supported by 3GPP partners.

O'Reilly -- Mobile Video: Working with MPEG-4 Clips on Mobile Phones
When you send a clip (or photo) by email over the Verizon Wireless network, it arrives as a message sent from your number via the Verizon portal, vzwpix.com, with the file as an attachment.
The next step was experimenting with renaming the working files to other possible file types: both players could still play the file when the extension was changed to.3gp--but version 6.5 rejected.3gpp as "not a file that QuickTime understands," while the newer version 7 played the file fine.
Trying the more generic types did not make QuickTime happy: in version 7, renaming to.mp4 was rejected with "unknown error," and.mov was understandably identified as "not a movie file." Version 6.5 was less happy, and just failed to launch the.mov file without further comment.
