The city reached its highest point of prosperity in the Archaic (7th-6th centuries BC) and Classical periods (5th-4th centuries), when it was the most important urban centre of the area, the seat of the Macedonian kings and the place where all the traditional sanctuaries were established.
The most remarkable of these was the tomb of Philip II (359-336 B.C.) and its discovery is considered to be one of the most important archaeological events of the century.

In this essay I intend to explore the political systems that were in existence within the 4th and 3rd Millenium BC within Mesopotamia, and hopefully to ascertain whether any forms of democracy existed, and to what level of development they had achieved.
It Appears that in Mesopotamia in the 4th and 3rd Millenium there existed a politic state in which the ruler had to lay his proposals before the people, first a group of elders and then the assembly of the towns people.
The main characteristic then of democracy in the early 4th and 3rd millenium bc is that it conforms to a primitive democratic pattern in its provisional and ad hoc character.
