  Bases of the SAAF   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-28)
The SAAF most northern air base, situated near the border with Zimbabwe, it is also it's most modern.
The SAAF commenced vacating the base in 1999, with the intention of leaving only the SAAF Museum behind and thus the base is now known as 'Swartkop', an extension of AFB Waterkloof.
Although it was announced in 2002 that the units based at AFB Ysterplaat would relocate to the existing SAAF premises at Cape Town International Airport, it was subsequently decided to move the units at AFB Yysterplaat Detached to AFB Ysterplaat and AFB Langebaanweg, with the units moving in 2003.

 South Africa - Air Force Equipment
The establishment of the SAAF was greatly facilitated by the extremely generous decision by the Imperial Government in 1919 to allocate to the Union some 100 aeroplanes from its war stocks, complete with spared and equipment.
The SAAF’s single most memorable feat in North Africa was probably the "Boston Shuttle Service", during which eighteen aircraft of 12 and 24 Squadrons showered hundreds of tons of bombs on the Afrika Korps as it relentlessly pushed the Eighth Army back towards Egypt during the "Gazala Gallop" in the first half of 1942.
The unit was renamed the SAAF Regiment on 1 August 1943, its task being the defence of airfields and the capture of enemy aerodromes.

 41 Squadron
It became a fully fledged SAAF Squadron in 1968 and was re-equipped with the Atlas A3M Bosbok and C4M Kudu.
In 1976 the Squadron was equipped solely with the Kudu and moved to Lanseria airfield.
Squadron flying operations were moved to AFB Swartkop from April to October 2004 in order to facilitate the completion of the upgrading of the operational areas of AFB Waterkloof before AAD in September 2004.

 Kiwi Aircraft Images : DC-3 /C-47 Dakota
The aircraft served with 40 and 41 Squadrons, acting as the first air ambulance while with the later.
Suspicion that the aircraft was bound for Rhodesia kept the aircraft in New Zealand till December 1980.
Brought on charge by the RNZAF at Rukuhia on August 16 1945, the aircraft served with 41 Squadron at Whenuapai from August 29 (including a period at Changi in Singapore) until loaned to NAC on July 3, 1952.

 Squadron 41
The Squadron was disbanded on the 30th October 1944, with its members either being transferred to other SAAF Squadrons or returning home to South Africa.
In January 1963 the Squadron was reformed as an army co-operation unit, based at Potchefstroom operating Auser and Cessna 185 aircraft.
During October 1968 41 Squadron was incorporated into SAAF and was based at AFB Swartkop.

When this squadron arrived it was incorporated into the RAF as 237 Squadron, stationed at Nairobi.
A Hart, SR106, from 237 Squadron was narrowly missed as it was being refuelled.
By the end of February the SAAF were starting to receive more Hurricanes and it was decided to pass on its Gladiators to other units.

 Shackleton Project
Seven RAF squadrons were equipped with the Mk 1 and Mk 1A.
At this time the SAAF was seeking replacements for its ageing Short Sunderland flying-boats - which No.35 Squadron was operating out of Congella sea-base near Durban.
Soon joined by a third, the SAAF Shacks took part in a combined British-American-Dutch exercise in the North Sea and then flew to their new home.

 2 Sqdn SAAF (Flying Cheetahs) in Korea
The South African squadron came under the operational control of the 18th Fighter-Bomber Wing of the US Fifth Air Force, which was the tactical air force of the Far East Air Forces (FEAF).
The squadron flew numerous sorties to assist the hard-pressed ground forces, but were continually moved back to new bases as the communist advance continued.
The squadron was mainly employed in a ground attack role as the Sabre proved to be an excellent aircraft for dive-bombing, carrying two 1000lb bombs or napalm and rockets.

In the end the AFC squadrons were recorded with their AIF nomenclature by the RAF due to Australian Government pressure.
The RAAF 4xx squadrons are a bit odd, 451 Sqn got a CO removed due to the squadron having low morale, 462 got disbanded in the Middle East and reformed in Europe because there was not enough RAAF members posted to it.
RNZAF squadrons operating in the South Pacific were seldon in contact with RAF units, all those operating in Europe and Africa being numbered in the 400-series.

 Canadair Sabre
The first RAF Squadron to take delivery of the Sabre was No 67 Tactical Air Force Squadron, which became operational in May of 1953.
South Africa had actually operated a squadron of Sabres during the Korean War, but these aircraft had actually been only "loaned" to No. 2 Squadron of the SAAF and were returned to the USAF when No. 2 Squadron returned home.
SAAF serials were 350 to 383 (RCAF serials were 23669/23702).

Around midday on 24 June 1940 four Blenheims of 39 Squadron and two of 11 Squadron in two flights of three approached Diredawa for the fifth raid on this airfield.
During the night Blenheims of 8 Squadron from Aden had bombed the airfields there, and in the morning six fighters from Dogabur approached the main airfield at the same time as Junkers Ju86s of 12 SAAF Squadron arrived to bomb.
During the attack on the main airfield a 41 SAAF Squadron gunner had climbed into the rear cockpit of a Hartbeeste to return fire, while more Hurricanes were now scrambling, giving chase as the enemy fighters sped away towards the hills around Diredawa.

By September the SAAF No. 3 Squadron was ready to begin operations and problems, and these Hawks were dispatched to Aiscia on the Ethiopian frontier to try ti disrupt Savoia-Marchetti Sm 75 transports.
While air combat was nonexistent, the SAAF Mohawks were heavilly enaged in ground attack sorties against the Italians at Gondar and throughout Ethiopia.
Hawks were posted to 23 Squadron in Alaska, while others served with the 16th and 32nd PGs in the Canal Zone, but saw no combat there.

 Friedrich Körner
On 19 March, 1942, an RAF Curtiss P-40, possibly of 80 Squadron, 7 SAAF Wing, was downed by Körner over the sea east of Tobruk.
Once the initial shock and tension of a younger pilot's first aerial victory wore off, the fledgling fighter pilots were then better able to effectively put their air combat skills to the test.
Körner was a firm believer that it was far better to have 10 pilots in a squadron with 10 kills each, than to have just one greedy pilot with 30-40 kills.
