Colonel Douglas MacArthur, who was instrumental in forming the division as Chief of Staff and one of its early commanders in World War One said shortly after mobilization, "The 42nd Division stretches like a Rainbow from one end of America to the other." Reporters liked the reference and the division nickname was born.
The 42nd Division returned to its roots as a truly diversified division in 1993 when it consolidated with elements of the 26th and 50th divisions to form one National Guard Division.
The division participated in the northeastern states’ disaster response for blizzards and floods in 1996, fires in 1997, the devastating ice storm and New York’s tornado recovery in 1998, and the Y2K contingency and snowstorm and hurricane responses in 1999 and 2000.

The 42nd (Rainbow) Infantry Division was formed from the National Guard units of 26 states and the District of Columbia and activated in August 1917.
The 42nd Division was the first in its corps to enter Germany, the first to penetrate the Siegfried line and the first into Munich.
In addition, soldiers from the 42nd Division were among the first to be activated and deployed in New York City after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

During the next several weeks, the 42nd was involved in frequent skirmishes up and down the Valley against the army of Phil Sheridan, culminating in the retreat of the Confederate Second Corps at Opequon Creek on September 19 and the rout of Early’s entire army at Fisher’s Hill on the 22nd.

The 42nd Infantry (Rainbow) Division's history as a unit began with America's entry into World War I. Amidst the rush by America to mobilize, individual states competed with each other for the honor to be the first to send their National Guard units to fight in the trenches of Europe.
It was during the 42nd Division's rapid advance through Germany in April 1945 that they, along with the Guard's 45th Infantry Division, liberated the infamous Dachau concentration camp.
The Division ended the war serving as occupation forces in Austria and was inactivated in June 1946.

The 42nd arrived in Europe in 1917 as the war was entering a new phase: Russia had dropped out of the war, America was joining the war, and Germany was racing to provide tremendous reinforcement before the American forces arrived.
In September, the Rainbow Division, then under the 4th American Army Corps, was ordered to attack the center of the south side of the San Mihiel Salient and was assigned to the defense of the Essey-Pannes Sector until September 30, when it was relieved by the 89th Division.
The 42nd Division backed off and was able to claim that the Americans who got closest to Sedan were members of the 166th Infantry of the 83rd Infantry Brigade.

The 36th Division Quartermaster Train was organized in the Texas National Guard during the years 1923-1937, and in 1926 the 117th Supply Train and the 111th Supply Train were reconstituted and consolidated with it.
To complete its training, the 42nd Division was attached to the French Seventh Army Corps in the Luneville Sector, February 21, 1918, and participated in raids and routine trench warfare.

Joyce Kilmer, a famous American poet, was a soldier in the Rainbow Division; he was killed in action in France in World War I. The Rainbow Division fought in some of the bloodiest battles of World War I including the battles at Verdun and Argonne, as well as the famous Battle of the Champagne.
During World War II, the Rainbow Division was activated in July 1943, and following the Normandy Invasion, three Infantry Regiments were sent to Europe in the Autumn of 1944, ahead of the rest of the division which did not arrive in France until January 1945.
The 42nd claims this honor because Brigadier General Henning Linden accepted the surrender of the camp, but the 45th claims that they were given orders to capture the camp and that they arrived first, overcoming the resistance of the SS soldiers in the adjacent SS Training Camp and Garrison.
