Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral are within the target of yet another powerful hurricane as Jeanne churns toward a potential direct hit to the spaceport on Sunday with 120 mph winds.
NASA's Stennis Space Center in Mississippi and the Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans were west of the worst of the storm, and initial reports indicate there is little or no damage to those facilities.

The 45th Space Wing does not currently support a manned or unmanned program that requires the launching of Metrockets to validate weather prior to a launch, however the Air Force conducts Metrocket launches to make sure the rockets and their instrumentation are working properly.
Space Shuttle Discovery is scheduled to conclude Mission STS-105 with a landing at Runway 33 at the Kennedy Space Center Shuttle Landing Facility (SLF) at 12:46 p.m.
This month's space launch activity will be restricted to the three launches which have already occurred, with the next Cape launch not scheduled to occur until October 1 due to pending upgrades to the range infrastructure.

The wing’s Department of Defense Manned Spaceflight Support Office joined with U.S. Strategic Command and North American Aerospace Defense/U.S. Northern Command to field a large cadre of search and recovery and security forces.
The standby rescue and recovery forces were not needed and the Eastern Range’s vast network of radar, telemetry, meteorological, optical and communications instrumentation assisted a picture-perfect launch.
The crewmembers on this mission are delivering supplies to the International Space Station and replacing critical components on the orbiting outpost.

The U.S. Air Force’s 45th Space Wing has reduced the time it takes to back up critical data by 86 percent by installing two Dell/EMC storage area networks (SANs).
These programs generate significant amounts of data, including launch photos, videos, weather maps, launch schedules and space shuttle flight information, all of which must be backed up, or stored to protect against data loss.
This summer, the Wing plans to use fiber optics to connect the two SANs at Patrick AFB and Cape Canaveral AFS, which are located about 25 miles apart.

 Range Modernization Reduces Launch Costs
The RSA program, a 12-year, $1 billion modernization effort to upgrade the Air Force's aging space launch infrastructure in order to reduce the cost of access to space.
The first modernization project originated in 1988 with the construction of the 45th Space Wing's Range Operations Control Center, or ROCC, located on the Eastern Range at Cape Canaveral AFS, Fla. Based at Patrick Air Force Base, the 45th SW operates one of two Air Force space launch ranges.
