45th parallel south - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 45th parallel of south latitude is the east-west line that marks the theoretical halfway point between the equator and the South Pole.
(The true halfway point is somewhat south of this parallel because the Earth is not a perfect sphere but bulges at the equator and is flattened at the poles.
The exceptions are the southern end of South America where it crosses the Aysen Region of Chile and Chubut Province of Argentina, and southern New Zealand where it crosses the South Island immediately north of Oamaru.

The Highway 42 marker is north of Jacksonport and the Highway 57 marker is south of Egg Harbor.
But, because the earth is slightly flattened at the poles, the distance from the 45th parallel to the North Pole is approximately 3117 miles and to the equator approximately 3105 miles.
Parallels of latitude bow equator-ward relative to grid lines, so the 5000-km grid line is south of the halfway latitude on the edges of the grid zone and north of it in the center.

But as we rode along the parallel, we concluded that cartography, that curious blend of art and science, might just as well be the result of wishful thinking.
Situated on Passamaquoddy Bay in the south eastern section of Washington County, the 45th parallel of north latitude passes right through the town.
The plan was simple: we'd find out where the 45th ambled into the bay, walk back in a straight line, and knock on the door of the first house we encountered; the folks inside would be the easternmost in America living on the 45th.

Circle of latitude - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
On the Earth, a circle of latitude or parallel is an imaginary east-west circle that connects all locations with a given latitude.
The equator is the circle that is equidistant from both the North Pole and South Pole.
A circle of latitude is often called a parallel, because circles of latitude are a fixed distance apart and on some map projections, including the Mercator projection, they are parallel.

Log Cabin Chronicles Vermont-Quebec Borderlines pages
From the beginning, American and Canadian officials squabbled over whose reading of the 45th was more accurate; because of the rudimentary nature of equipment and surveying techniques in early days, data often varied.
In 1796, the Vermont General Assembly claimed that the 45th parallel was too far south - in other words, parts of Quebec should be in the USA.
To settle the dispute, the two countries appealed to the King of Netherlands, who in 1831 pronounced that the 45th parallel should be moved to a new position - virtually in the middle of the two lines claimed by each country.

The Korean War - Poster Narratives
North and South Korea were willing to fight on, but after twelve months of large-scale but indecisive conflict, their Cold War supporters—the People’s Republic of China and the Soviet Union on one side, the United States and its UN allies on the other—had concluded it was not in their respective interests to continue.
When the North Koreans and Chinese dropped their demand that the armistice line be the 38th Parallel, the two sides agreed on 27 November that the armistice demarcation line would be the existing line of contact, provided that an armistice agreement was reached in thirty days.
By the beginning of 1953, however, the larger picture was still one of continuing military stalemate, with few changes in the front lines, reflecting the deadlock in the armistice talks that had led the UN delegation to call an indefinite recess in October 1952.
