46 defense - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 46 defense (also known as the "46") is an American football defensive formation popularized by Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan who later became head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Currently, the "46" is rarely used in modern professional and college football due to the emergence of the West Coast Offense, popularized by San Francisco 49ers head coach Bill Walsh, and other offensive schemes that rely on short, timed passes from formations that use multiple receivers.
A variation of the "46" defense is more often used in the modern game by bringing a fourth defensive back (usually the strong safety) up closer to the line of scrimmage.

Defensive Line Read On The Run
It corrects the basic flaws with the 46 defense, which is that you have to have superior athletes to run it effectively.
In this style of defense, the defensive tackles need not be the most talented or the most overpowering on the team, however, they must be disciplined and among the largest individuals on the team.
This allows for the basic principle of the 46 which is at least 6 men pressuring the QB limiting his time to throw the ball anywhere deeper than the designated zone area, or make a read progression.

Buddy Ryan was the defensive coordinator and creator of the "46" defense, an intense man whose defense made hitting people in the mouth chic.
Ryan spoke to the Baltimore Ravens defense earlier this summer at the urging of son Rex, the team's defensive coordinator.
Defensive end Terrell Suggs, a key pass rusher and player in this style, was asked if he knew who played his spot for that Bears defense.

No one is happier to be a part of the Baltimore Ravens' new 46 defense than middle linebacker Ray Lewis, who can't wait to again experience the freedom of hunting down running backs without the hassle of shaking off bothersome offensive linemen.
Ryan is the father of Ravens first-year defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, who has installed the high-pressure alignment in part to allow Lewis to attack the football without having to take on the kind of isolation blocks that at times limited his effectiveness last season.
Playing last season in the 3-4 alignment of defensive coordinator Mike Nolan, who left to become head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, Lewis led the Ravens with 200 tackles and was selected to play in the Pro Bowl for a seventh time.

While defensive tackle may not be the Ravens strongest position, having a powerful player like Gregg in the middle of the line will help the Ravens collapse and control the interior of the offensive line like the 46 calls for.
The 46 defense calls for a lot of pressure and Ryan must be licking his chops coming up with blitzes that allow Lewis to get to the quarterback.
The Ravens won’t use the 46 defense exclusively but the more success they have with it early in the year, the more it will be used as the season goes on.

Ideally, with defensive ends using their speed and tackles using their power, the defensive line will be so effective that all five offensive linemen will be needed to block them, and even then the quarterback will be in jeopardy.
The defensive coordinator then has lots of options: he can send a linebacker or two on a blitz, knowing there is no one to block them, or he can commit the linebacker to coverage, knowing that the line will still be able to get pressure.
The defense is named after his number because in the late 1970’s when Ryan first used the defense in third down situations, it was Plank who moved from his safety position to a blitzing linebacker.

The 46 is designed to allow All-Pro middle linebacker Ray Lewis to roam free toward the football and not have to take on the isolation blocks that stymied him a year ago against the Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers.

With the Ravens employing the high-pressure 46 defense as their base scheme, first-year coordinator Rex Ryan expected much better results.
Part of the logic behind the switch to the 46 defense was that it was supposed to free up linebacker Terrell Suggs, who has 22½ sacks the past two years, and Thomas, who had eight sacks last year, to rush the quarterback more.
