Well, ol' Eric decided to clean himself up and go back to the music he truly loved...and thus was born '461 Ocean Boulevard' (an actual address of an actual house in Miami Beach where he decided to overcome his demons).
And, I must say, as much as I love(d) Cream, '461...' is a very good blues album...so very much better than the watered down, half-hearted attempts he's lately been foisting upon the generic public's love for, well...just that.

"461 Ocean Boulevard", Eric Clapton's second solo album from 1974, is an appealing amalgam of several different styles (rock, pop, R&B, country, blues and even reggae).
It may not have the flashy guitar work of his earlier recordings, nor is it as gritty as fans of Eric Clapton the blues player (rather than Eric Clapton the pop singer) might have preferred.
All in all, "461 Ocean Boulevard" is a really fine album, and one that Eric Clapton tried again and again to replicate over the next ten years.

And 461 Ocean Boulevard contained Clapton's cover of Bob Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff"- represented here in a tougher, more expansive live rendition from the band's December 5th, 1974 concert at the Hammersmith Odeon in London- which exposed millions of Americans to raggae music for the first time when it became a Number One hit.
461 Ocean Boulevard re-established Clapton in both critical and commercial terms, but it also ushered in the phase of his career that engendered concern in many of his longest-standing followers.
In their concentration of song writing, vocals and melody, 461 Ocean Boulevard and the nine studio LPs that have followed it de-emphasize the pyrotechnic guitar work that characterized Clapton's tracks with the Bluesbreakers, Cream, and Derek and the Dominos- though there's certainly no shortage of excellent playing.

461 Ocean Boulevard (Polydor ’74) Rating: A- After Layla capped off a restlessly brilliant first seven years of his career, Clapton sank into despair and drugs.
461 Ocean Boulevard mapped out the course his solo career would subsequently take (but rarely if ever with such inspired results), as Clapton’s voice takes center stage along with his guitar as Clapton sought to shed his Guitar God status while proving his chops as a singer and songwriter.
There’s One In Every Crowd (Polydor ’75) Rating: B+ Though not nearly as successful as 461 Ocean Boulevard since it failed to produce any hit singles or signature songs, There’s One In Every Crowd was another fine album that's somewhat overlooked and underrated.

It's a tribute to Clapton's charisma and talents that 461 Ocean Boulevard doesn't succumb to the danger Clapton courts by playing unobtrusively with an unimpressive band.
461 debuts a new, thin, circumscribed and circumspect style which will disappoint many—it has neither the beauty nor the power of the old sound.
461 is also partially redeemed by the quality of some of the material.
