The Zhou dynasty is the longest of China's many dynasties, and is divided into the Western Zhou (1122-771 BCE) and the Eastern Zhou (771-256 BCE), as the Zhou were forced out of their capital at Xian by barbarian invaders from the north, and moved east to found their new capital in Luoyang.
The collection was banned in the third century bce, along with the other Confucian classics, but was reconstructed during the Han dynasty, and the edition that is most complete derives from this time.
The traditional Laozi is said to have been an older contemporary of Confucius (551-479 bce), who instructed the younger sage in the rites, but this story seems not to have circulated until the third century bce.

Amyrtaeus was probably the grandson of the Libyan Amyrtaeus of Sais, who known to have carried on a rebellion in 465–463 BCE with another Libyan chief, Inaros (himself a grandson of Psametik III), against the Satrap of Artaxerxes II.
Previous to assuming the throne of Egypt, Amyrtaeus had revolted against Darius II as early as 411 BCE, leading a guerrilla action in the western Nile Delta around his home city of Sais.
While the rule of Amyrtaeus in the western Delta was established by 404 BCE, but Artexerxes I continued to be recognized as king at Elephantine as late as 401 BCE, but Aramaic papyri from the site refer to Regnal Year 5 of Amyrtaeus in September 400 BCE.
