Triple   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)

A 29-year-old pregnant patient, gravida 4, para 3, sought genetic counseling because of a daughter who had Down's syndrome.
Amniotic fluid obtained by amniocentesis indicated the fetal karyotype to be 47,XXX.
The pregnancy was terminated and the karyotype was confirmed by typing venous blood from the fetus and the finding of double Barr bodies in the histologic sections of fetal tissue.

Based on these data it was concluded that the Y-chromosome promotes growth of enamel and dentin whereas the X-chromosome effect on tooth crown growth seems to be restricted to enamel formation.
The aim of the present study was to investigate permanent tooth root lengths in 47,XXX females in order to gain additional information about the growth in these females.
Results: The results showed that the root lengths of the maxillary teeth of the 47,XXX females are of the same magnitude as in population control females, but the root lengths in the mandibular teeth are longer in 47,XXX females than in population control females and males.

Deviations in the number or structure of the 23rd chromosome pair, commonly referred to as sex chromosome abnormalities (SCAs), occur frequently, yet their developmental implications are not well understood.
SCAs are found in 1 out of 300 to 400 births, and they most often include the addition of an extra X or Y chromosome in males (the 47,XXY and 47,XYY karyotypes) and the addition or absence of an X in females (the 47,XXX and 45,X karyotypes).

Triple X syndrome - Genetics Home Reference
Triple X syndrome, also called trisomy X or 47,XXX, is characterized by the presence of one extra X chromosome in each of a female's cells.
Females normally have two X chromosomes in each cell (46,XX), but females with trisomy X have three X chromosomes, for a total of 47 chromosomes per cell (47,XXX).
Researchers are not yet certain why an extra copy of the X chromosome is associated with tall stature and learning problems in some girls and women.

 Triple-X Females - an orientation
Since 1960 geneticists have given new names to chromosome aberrations from the chromosome constitution and not as previously from the name of the person who first described the chromosome aberration.
When Patricia Jacobs and co-workers first found and described the chromosome constitution 47,XXX in 2 women in Scotland the name became triple-X in accordance with XYY for males with the chromosome constitution 47,XYY as first described by Sandberg and co-workers in 1961.
Women with triple-X have 3 X'es (47,XXX) or in rare cases 4 X-chromosomes (48,XXXX) also called tetra-X. In extremely rare cases there may be 5 X-chromosomes (49,XXXXX) also called penta-X. The chromosome constitution 47,XXX is found in approximately half of the women with an extra X-chromosome.
