At the end of the 6th century BC, Darius the Great ruled over an immense realm, from western China to eastern Europe.
But the conquest of Asia Minor (546 BC) left the Ionian Greeks under Persian rule, while the other Greeks were free, a state of affairs that was going to cause trouble sooner or later.
In 499 BC, instigated by Aristagoras in Miletus, the Ionian Revolt broke out; Ionian cities threw out the "tyrants" that the Persians had set over them, formed a league, and applied for help from the other Greeks.

By 351 BC, however, the status of the league had been seriously weakened in the north and in the east, and in 338 BC the league was utterly destroyed by the victory of Philip II of Macedon in the battle of Chaeronea.

On the death of Hippocrates, tyrant of Gela (491 BC), Gelo, who had been his commander of cavalry, succeeded him; and in 485 BC, his aid having been invoked by the Gamori (the oligarchical landed proprietors) of Syracuse who had been driven out by the populace, he seized the opportunity of making himself despot.
He was honoured as a hero, and his memory was held in such respect that when all the brazen statues of tyrants were condemned to be sold in the time of Timoleon (150 years later) an exemption was made in favour of the statue of Gelo.

"The Athenian Empire grew because no one really wanted to stop it." The Athenian Empire became the dominant power in Greece and the Aegean between 478 and 445 BC because the states who could have defeated her saw more reason to ally themselves with Athens than to oppose her.
The rise in power of Athens can be attributed to manipulation of the Delian League and brute force on her behalf and lack of unification and ability to fight a common enemy on the behalf of her weaker allies.

This eventually led to mass invasion and counterinvasion by both land and sea, wholesale destruction of cities, and -- on rare occasions -- the punishment and enslavement of entire bodies of citizens, including women and children.
By the 4th century BC warfare was well on its way to becoming the internationalized institution that Alexander the Great and his followers are generally thought to have perfected.

Believed to have been originally constructed by Nimrod, the tower's most impressive incarnation was probably under King Nebuchadnezzar II (605-562 BC), who apparently rebuilt the tower to stand 295 feet high.
According to an inscription made by the king, the tower was constructed of "baked brick enameled in brilliant blue." The terraces of the tower may have also been planted with flowers and trees.
