  British 47th (1/2nd London) Division - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The British 47th (1/2nd London) Division was a first-line Territorial Force division.
Originally called the "2nd London Division" it was designated the 47th Division in 1915 and referred to as the "1/2nd London Division" after the raising of the second-line 60th (2/2nd London) Division.
The division was sent to France in March 1915, one of the first Territorial divisions to enter the fighting, and served on the Western Front for the duration of the First World War.

 1st Armored Division
Armored Division in the breakout from the Anzio beachhead in May, 1944 got a certain amount of consolation out of the fact that they were captured by "a veteran division", as they put it.
The division's three armored artillery battalions and the tank destroyer battalion, all of which had been firing in support of Fifth Army troops since November 25, were attached to the task force to aid the actual assault on the mountain by the 6th Armored Infantry Regiment.
Volterra still had not fallen when the division was relieved from the sector June 10, but a battalion of medium tanks stayed behind to assist in the final assault on the town.

On January 18, 1864, the 47th re-enlisted for the war, along with Strahl’s Brigade, and the 13th and 154th Regiments, which moved General Hindman to issue a proclamation, reading in part: "The spirit in which these brave men enlisted is an eloquent rebuke to the despondent.
No further details of regimental activities were found, but as part of Cheatham’s Division, the regiment went through the Atlanta Campaign under General Joseph E. Johnston, the return to Tennessee under General John B. Hood, and the final move to North Carolina and the Battle of Bentonville, North Carolina.
In the final reorganization of General Joseph E. Johnston’s Army April 9, 1865, the 47th was reported in the Second Consolidated Tennessee Infantry Regiment, under Lieutenant Colonel George W. Pease, composed of the 11th / 12th / 13th / 29th / 47th / 50th / 51st / 52nd / 164th Tennessee Infantry Regiments.

The 47th Tennessee Infantry Regiment was composed of 10 companies from Dyer, Gibson and Obion counties in West Tennessee raised during the fall of 1861.
Many of the men of the 47th had blisters the size of silver dollars on their feet which attest to the harshness of the Trenton to Shiloh march on men unused to a military campaign.

The 39th and the 47th regiments had a lineage that included service in the 4th Division during WWI, when they fought in the Aisne-Marne offensive of 1918, at one point relieving the 42nd “Rainbow” Division.
Then the 9th was reassembled and relieved the 1st Division for a week and a half of fighting through the mountains at the center of Sicily, to the Northwest of Mt. Etna.

One of the most apparent differences is that the number of infantry battalions in Divisions on the Western Front was reduced from 13 to 10 (including the pioneer battalion).
The 43rd and 44th Division were sent to India in 1914, and by the end of the war they had lost much of their infantry which had been sent mostly to the Middle-East as reinforcements.
Another exception was the 53rd Division which changed to the Indian establishment between 4 June and 29 August 1918.

I also traveled to Europe and interviewed residents who lived in villages liberated by the "Old Reliables." I am currently rewriting the history of the 9th Infantry Division during World War II along with testimonies from the men who were there and photographs of the 9th's former battlefields and headquarters.

Known today as Bois des Fourcaux, High Wood was a major German stronghold until it was taken and held by the British, after numerous attempts spanning two months, in September 1916, with the assistance of underground mining.
Various British attack methods were employed: a cavalry charge, infantry assaults, gas attacks, flame thrower attacks, machine gun barrages, tanks - and mine warfare.
The wood was eventually carried by the 47th (London) Division, to whom a memorial has been dedicated at the wood.

I joined the Naval Reserve 47th Division 11th Naval Battalion in St. Paul, Minnesota on February, 1938.
In July of 1938, 150 men from the 47th and 48th Division traveled by train to Duluth, Minnesota to board the USS Paducah, Ex.
When the call came for the 47th to active Naval duty, the destroyer crews were partially trained in each of our rated specialties and in my case as a fireman in the boiler room.
