The 47th Infantry Regiment was organized during the winter of 1861 - 1862 with men raised in the counties of Mitchell, Randolph, Bulloch, Chatham, Screven, Tattnall, Appling, Bryan, Liberty, and Dodge.
The 47th was then assigned to General Stovall's and J. Jackson's Brigade and fought with the Army of Tennessee at Chickamauga, Chattanooga, and in the Atlanta Campaigne.
The 47th was then transferred to G. Harrison's command, where it participated in the defense of Savannah, GA, and the North Carolina Campaigne.

GI's from the 9th Infantry Division in the streets of Cherbourg atop a captured Axis tank on June 28, 1944.
On May 25th, 1954, the division colors were transferred to Goepengin, Germany, to replace the 28th Infantry Division which had resumed its traditional role with the Pennsylvania National Guard.
The three original infantry regiments were converted to Battle Groups and the 1st Battle Groups of the 5th Infantry and the 13th Infantry were added to the division.
