Keenly aware that the most recent.454 Casull revolver introduction was Ruger’s Super Redhawk in 1999, and equally aware that Ruger was actively urging the use of.45 Colt loads and “medium” Casull loadings in that same revolver to promote its popularity and increased general use, Hornady made the approach.
The Super Redhawk was originally designed and introduced in 1986 as a.44 Magnum and is still available in its original 7 1/2- and 9 1/2-inch.44-caliber iterations with a natural brushed-satin stainless-steel finish and fluted cylinders.
When the.454 Casull version of the Super Redhawk was introduced in 1999, Ruger spokesmen candidly acknowledged they did not expect the new chambering to be shot a lot for casual plinking or for steel-target competition.

Ruger Super Redhawk   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
The Super Redhawk holds six rounds of ammunition in its cylinder in either.44 magnum,.454 Casull, and.480 Ruger.
The differences between the variants (apart from the barrel caliber) are that the cylinder of the.454 Casull and the.480 Ruger are unfluted, and that the.454 Casull and.480 Ruger have a matte grey finish.

 The New Super Redhawk Alaskan
The Super Redhawk design was initially introduced as a.44 Magnum in 1986, and it still remains available in 7 1/2- and 9 1/2-inch.44-caliber versions with natural brushed-satin stainless-steel finish and fluted cylinders.
The Super Redhawk is actually much more closely related—and similar in design—to Ruger’s mid-frame GP100.357 Magnum revolvers than to the original.44 Magnum Redhawk introduced in 1979, even though it bears the Redhawk name and employs the same crane-lock cylinder latch point system.
Design constraints of the single-spring action required the standard Redhawk grip frame to be more closely stationed to the rear of the trigger guard, which left little room for wraparound, oversize stocks—which is why standard Redhawks have always been equipped with relatively small “service-type” side-panel grips.

Ruger Super Redhawk   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
The original Redhawk was also the first double-action revolver specifically designed to handle the powerful.44 Magnum cartridge, and it pioneered the patented Ruger "single spring" mechanism for both hammer and trigger.
The Super Redhawk, chambered in.480 Ruger and the powerful.454 Casull, is ideal for sportsmen using a handgun to hunt big game, and is also popular among metallic silhouette shooters.
The Super Redhawk Alaskan features a six-shot cylinder and is chambered for either.454 Casull and.45 Colt, or.480 Ruger, and is equipped with a Hogue® Monogrip® to help cushion recoil.

 Loading the .480
Since writing the original article for Gunblast.com reviewing Ruger's new.480 Super Redhawk (see article at The.480 Ruger), I have had the opportunity to do some load development with the new cartridge.
A shooter desiring a.475 bore handgun can buy a Super Redhawk, dies, leather, and a large supply of components for much less than a custom five-shot revolver alone.
All testing was done using Ruger's Super Redhawk DA revolver with a 7-1/2" barrel.

480 Ruger in perspective - Load data, range testing, a bit of history and an Elk hunt
In the spring of 2001 Sturm Ruger and Co. unveiled a new proprietary cartridge for their Super Redhawk Revolver.
This alloy, when appropriately heat-treated and peak aged is capable of 260,000 psi ultimate tensile strength, as well as high fracture toughness and excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
It has all the grace and lines of a tire iron, but "pretty is as pretty shoots", and this revolver shoots very nicely indeed.

 The Ruger 454
The root of all this tongue wagging, the SRH in 454 Casull and the new 480 Ruger.
The Redhawk is an improvement of the SandW N frame, and the SRH goes one step further.
Why not just make the SRH in 475 Linebaugh instead of developing the 480, it gave Ruger an opportunity to have it's own named cartridge, recoil factors with the 475, and to just be different.

Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan .480 Ruger
About six months ago, I reviewed the.454 Casull version of the Super Redhawk Alaskan, so here I will not plow the same ground with details of the weapon, but rather attempt to display the potential power of the.480 Ruger when fired from this short-barreled sixgun.
Ruger's Super Redhawks feature a very strong locking system that locks the cylinder to the frame at both front and rear for added strength and reliability.
The Super Redhawk Alaskan (top) packs a powerful punch, but is not much larger than popular snubnose revolvers such as Charter Arms' Bulldog (bottom).

.480 Ruger & Ruger's Super Redhawk   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
480 Ruger is a dandy hunting round, but a bit much for self defense.
I have not yet fired the.480 Ruger Super Red, but the idea of half the.454 recoil and nearly 80% of its energy is intriguing.
The same load fired in a Ruger Redhawk or Blackhawk produces less felt recoil than the 29; there is a minor weight difference, but that can't account for it.

Taurus Raging Bull - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Functionally, the Raging Bull is unique in that it has a manually operated front cylinder latch, whose release can be seen on the crane in the picture.
Front cylinder latches are required for such high powered double action revolvers, and are found on the Ruger Super Redhawk and the Smith and Wesson Model 500 revolver, but they are actuated by the rear cylinder latch.
The manually operated latch on the Raging Bull is simpler (and thus less expensive to produce) yet equally as strong, but requires two hands to open the cylinder.

 The Ruger Super Redhawk
The Super Redhawk.480 Ruger delivers a weightier projectile--with more frontal area--than the.44 Magnum yet delivers a slightly less sharp jolt to the hands than the.454 Casull.
Actually, for an arm that sports one of the largest handgun frames currently manufactured, the Super Redhawk in general handles pretty well, due no doubt to the reasonably configured grip that's manageable for even my small- to medium-size mitts.
I took the Alaskan, along with a 7 1/2-inch.454 Super Redhawk, to the range, and, using four types of ammo--Winchester 260-grain PTHP.454, Winchester 250-grain JHP.454, Hornady 300-grain JHP XTP.454 and Black Hills 200-grain JHP.45 Colt--both guns were benched at 25 yards and fired offhand at varying ranges up to 100 yards.

I am getting a 480 Ruger Super Redhawk next week and some reloading supplies with it.
There may have been some confusion as the 480 is a shortened 475 Linebaugh thus the 475 won't chamber in a 480 chambered pistol.
I haven't had the oppritunity to pick up the Super Redhawk yet because I've been to busy at work, but as soon as I do I will post whatever I find out about it.
