Intel 80486 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Intel i486 (also called 486 or 80486) is a range of 32-bit scalar Intel CISC microprocessors which is part of the Intel x86 family of processors.
The 486 has a 32-bit data bus and a 32-bit address bus.
With regards to the 486 system platform, early 486 machines were equipped with only 16-bit and 8-bit ISA slots.

A CPU History   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
The 486 was the first to have an integrated floating point unit (FPU) to replace the normally separate math coprocessor (not all flavors of the 486 had this, though).
The 486 chip was the first processor from Intel that was designed to be upgradeable.
The 486SX was, of course, slower than its DX cousin, but the resulting reduced cost and power lent itself to faster sales and movement into the laptop market.

486 processor   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
The 486 processor (or 80486 processor) family was introduced in 1989 by Intel.
The 486 processor had two versions: 486 SX with no math co-processor and the standard 486 DX versions.
The more advanced versions of 486 such as 486 DX-2 can run at speeds of 50, 66 and 75 MHz, and then 486 DX-4 can run up to 100 MHz.

The difference between the SX and the DX 486's was that the DX version had an integrated numeric co-processor and the SX version was "co-processor less".At the start of the 486 lifecycle, the SX and DX productions were different.
AMD had copied Intel's design and the 486 they produced were exact clones en therefore 100% compatible.
Initially the 486 worked at 5 volts but later this was decreased to 3.5 volt.

Early on, there were a lot of different manufacturers making the 486 processor (even AMD!) for Intel because Intel alone couldn't meet the demand for the hot new CPU at the time.

 Kingston's Turbo Chip 133
TurboChip is a high-performance and convenient solution to increase a computer's performance 250% over its current 486 processing speed to provide the power necessary to run today's popular multi-tasking computing environment.
Many 486 computers use ZIF (zero-insertion-force) sockets with a lever or retaining screw to make removing the CPU chip quick and easy.
Benefit: TurboChip 133 is designed to upgrade a large installed-base of 486 systems with 5-volt motherboards and the regulator allows the energy conserving 3-volt Am5x86-P75 processor chip to execute commands from the motherboard.

 13WHAM-TV || Rochester - 386 and 486 Processors   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
The most significant difference between the two generations of processors is that the 486 originally contained an integrated math coprocessor that allowed the computer to run more demanding software.
Intel later introduced SX and DX versions of the 486, as it had with the 386, but while the 486 DX still contained the math coprocessor, the SX model didn't.
A separate hardware upgrade, known as the 80487 SX, is required to upgrade the 486 SX to the same capabilities of the DX model.

While the DX line supported no L1 cache and up to 128KB of L2 cache on the motherboard, the SX supported NO L1 or L2 cache at all, making it somewhat slower than its DX counterpart.

Unfortunately, there is a small problem with just calling CPUID to find the CPU information, and that is: If the CPU you are running on does not support CPUID, it will crash (or, as the OS likes to call it, an "Invalid Instruction Exception").
Relax, though, because the process (and appropriate source code) to find out as much information as possible from any given CPU type is here, in flow-chart form (this assumes you are using at least a 386, which is a moot point as any compiler you'll find nowadays will require at least a 386 processor)
