The 49th was deactivated in 1968 and reformed into the 36th, 71st and 72nd separate brigades.
The 49th Armored Division was reactivated on November 1, 1973, with its headquarters at Camp Mabry, Austin, TX.

Division teaming began in 1998 as a pilot program, pairing the 49th with the 1st Cavalry Division headquartered at Fort Hood, Texas, and California's 40th Mechanized Division with the Army's 4th Mechanized Division, also headquartered at Fort Hood.
The 49th was in command of a total of 6,900 soldiers including the Maryland Guard's 629th Military Intelligence Battalion, Army Reservists and active duty forces from the 3rd Armored Calvary Regiment as well as foreign troops taking part in the operations such as Turkey, Poland and Russia.

 36th Infantry Division
The 36th Infantry Division was organized at Camp Bowie (Fort Worth), Texas, 18 July 1917, from units of the Texas and Oklahoma National Guard during World War I. The Division left Newport News, Virginia, in July and August of 1918, for France.
The 71st Brigade of the Division saw combat at St. Etiennes-Arnes and on 10 October 1918, the entire division relieved the 2nd Infantry Division and pushed the Germans to the Aisne River.
In 1973, the 49th Armored Division was reactivated, with the lineage and honors of the 36th Infantry Division inherited by the 36th Brigade of the 49th Armored Division.

 36th Infantry Division
During 1943, 1944 and 1945, it led U.S. forces in the invasion of Italy in the Gulf of Salerno, participated in the assault across the Rapido River and was involved in the breakout of the Anzio beachhead and the race to Rome.
After the 36th Infantry Division returned to the states, it was inactivated at Camp Patrick Henry, Va., on Dec. 15, 1945, and was reconstituted in the Texas National Guard in 1946.
The 49th Armored Division, organized near the beginning of the Cold War in 1949, was one of only two armored divisions the Army National Guard created.

 Texas Military Forces Museum Exhibits
The 36th Division was born with the mobilization of the Texas and Oklahoma National Guard for World War I in 1917.
The Division formed at Camp Bowie in Fort Worth and fought in the Meuse-Argonne offensive in France in the “Great War.” Highlighting this exhibit is a diorama of the Battle of St. Entienne in France in 1918 in which the 36th Division played a major role.
On 1 May 2004, the 49th Armored Division was deactivated and the 36th Infantry Division took its place in the troop structure of the state.

The combat divisions of the Guard, which a generation ago was the place to go to avoid fighting in Vietnam, have been assigned no role in the Army's war plans since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
Four of the divisions would be assigned to participate in the two "major theater wars" -- in the Persian Gulf and in Korea -- that are the bedrock of national military planning.
That would mean that the divisions would not likely be the first ones deployed to a conflict, though one official noted that the Army had six months after Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990 to assemble the force that ultimately drove the Iraqis out.

The 49th Armored Division of the Texas National Guard learned two years ago that it would command the U.S. sector of the NATO peacekeeping operation in Bosnia for much of 2000.
Gen. Michael Taylor is the 49th's assistant division commander, with major responsibilities for the operation.
