This military division was formed on April 1, 1908 as the West Riding Division in the Territorial Force of the British Army.
During the Second World war, the Division first saw action beginning on April 15-17, 1940 when two of its brigades took part in the short and ill-fated landings in Norway that were intended to retake the ports of Trondheim and Narvik from the Germans.
In 1942 the Division was transferred back to the United Kingdom until June 1944, when it moved to Normandy under the command of XXX Corps.

Infantry.-The uniforms of the four Foot Guard regiments are distinguished by the cuffs, which have slashed flaps and buttons, by the blue shoulder-straps and by the embroidery patches on the collar, cuff-flaps and skirts, which are analogous to the GardeLitzen of continental armies.
Swords, except in the case of Scottish infantry, are worn suspended by slings from a belt (the belt in infantry, rifles and hussars being worn under the tunic or sash).
In the 1st Guard division the shoulderstraps and piping are red and white, in the 2nd red and red, in the 3rd yellow and yellow respectively.

 The Territorial Force 1914-1918
Battalions of TF infantry were organised along the same modern lines as the professional army, together with higher formations and all of the necessary support units (transport, medical, signals, engineers, fortress garrisons and so on).
The infantry battalions were aligned to the local county regiments (for example the volunteers of the Wolverhampton and Walsall areas became the 5th and 6th Battalions (TF) of the South Staffordshire Regiment.)
Soon, entire TF Divisions proceeded overseas, either to the fighting fronts or as replacement garrisons as the regular troops were deployed to action.
