4AD Records - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The British indie rock record label 4AD Records was started in 1979 by Ivo Watts-Russell and Peter Kent, funded by Beggars Banquet Records.
It was originally formed as Axis Records, but this was quickly changed to 4AD when it became apparent that the name Axis was already being used by another music company.
In the 1990s, 4AD established an office in Los Angeles and enjoyed success with bands such as The Breeders, Red House Painters, Unrest, and His Name Is Alive.

Liz is pursuing a solo recording career, while Robin and Simon continue to work on their own musical projects, manage their Bella Union record label and the September Sound recording studio.
However, the only recordings to surface since then have been a series of remixes for a song entitled "Underwater," which are available only as bootlegs since it was never formally released.

4AD was perhaps the most distinctive, most aesthetically strong labels of the 1980s.
Being the first new 4AD signing in two years, and knowing how the label has become rather quiet in the "new artists" department, curiosity leads one to wonder about this new signing.
This record soars high, and follows in the tradition of such luminaries as Dead Can Dance, Cocteau Twins, and Harold Budd.

 IVO WATTS-RUSSELL: 4AD'S AURAL ARCHITECT
Excited by the music he was hearing in the late '70s, the one-time record store manager formed 4AD Records, a pioneering British label that has become synonymous with innovation and quality.
As a way to unify the diverse output on the label, many 4AD albums, particularly during the '80s, were presented with dreamy, surreal, soft-focus photography or art on their covers.
A large number of early 4AD albums, including those by the Cocteau Twins, were recorded at Blackwing Studios in London, which was initially equipped for 8-track recording, but eventually evolved into a 24-track facility.

It is not because Ivo, the founder of 4AD Records, is particularly difficult subject to interview, but because it is undeniable that Ivo has had a major role in the formation of independent music as we know it.
4AD Records was founded in 1980 by Ivo and partner Peter Kent as a side project from Beggar's Banquet, where Ivo was then employed.
But it is evident that there is a cohesion to 4AD releases in terms of their aesthetic, artistically pleasing packaging.

The demos from the 4AD release are nice to hear as well, much more reminiscent of earlier Cure records at times, and much more heavily reliant on keyboards than the previous songs.

The lead vocals come from the very talented Louise Kutkowski (one of the Kutkowski twins involved in later This Mortal Coil recordings); she is supported by a range of backing vocalists.
While her vocals aren't quite as spine-tingling as label-mate Lisa Gerrard, nor as world-weary as Kristin Hersch, her voice is well suited to the music and her inflections show elements of both of these other singers.
Although this is a sparse record, with the strings and bass guitar dominating, it feels like there is more there than there actually is.
