  Scifilm -- Reviews, 4D MAN (1959)
The makers of 4D MAN have not only come up with an interesting and novel concept, but refreshingly use it intelligently and in a non-exploitative manner.
As a result, 4D MAN never comes off as a gimmick film; the effects may be startling and plentiful, but it's the story and characters which come first.
Scott Nelson is a man who is literally coming apart, and Lansing is able to subtly show the emotions and thoughts of a man who hides his growing stress, as he undergoes a series of different pressures and setbacks.

A man in the fourth dimension is indestructible.
However, she had a relaxed, naturalistic quality that many actresses with far more training and experience lacked, and I think it adds to the believability of the picture.
"The 4D Man" is no masterpiece, of course, but it's definitely one of the more intriguing, and thoughtful, sci-fi epics of the '50s.

I remember FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND magazine had a contest (or maybe the studio sponsored it) challenging people to duplicate the abilities of the 4D MAN! The acting is good, as I mentioned, but Robert Lansing in the lead role is terrific, his performance is wonderful to watch.
Specifically, one who travels in the fourth dimension may not only be able to traverse the boundaries of time, but also would be able to occupy the same space, at the same time mind you, as an object we third dimension dwellers view as being solid...directed by Irvin S. Yeaworth Jr.
Also appearing is Robert Strauss (Stalag 17, The Man with the Golden Arm), Edgar Stehli (Atlantis, the Lost Continent), and a very young Patty Duke prior to her dual role as identical cousins on "The Patty Duke Show", which aired in the early 1960s.

AudioRevolution.com DVD Review of 4D Man
The movie is hampered a little by its budget; the special effects almost always give themselves away (though there is at least one stunning shot involving a mailbox that defies analysis), and art director William Jersey seems to have made a real good buy in blue paint.
But apart from the illogical but fascinating premise and the generally high standard of the production, the best aspect of 4D MAN is the intense, convincing and sympathetic performance of Robert Lansing in his first movie.
4D MAN is not one of the major science fiction movies of the 1950s, like THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, FORBIDDEN PLANET, INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, etc., but it's in the surprisingly large number of very good movies that lie just under that top-of-the-line stratum.

 4D MAN
Much like The Invisible Man's Jack Griffin, Scott is morally corrupted by this almost god-like ability; that very night he uses it to rob a bank of $50,000 (for no other reason than he can).
The touch of the 4D Man means death.
So do the "4D" special effects, achieved either through blue-screen process photography or simple camera tricks.

 4D Man (1959) - Movie Reviews at TopTenReviews.com
4D Man (1959) is ranked the #6,135 best movie of all time.
This was a surprisingly good 50s sf entry from the director and producer - Irvin S. Yeaworth and Jack H. Harris - who had just made the alien invader B-movie classic The Blob (1958).
A nice premise about the 4th dimension results in an exciting low-budget pulp sci-fi film, which is supported by some fine acting by Robert Lansing and Lee Meriwether.

 4D Man
Director Irwin S. Yeaworth, Jr., and screenwriters Theodore Simonson and Cy Chermak were among these last holdouts, and 4D Man/The Evil Force/Master of Terror, adapted from a story by The Blob producer Jack H. Harris, was their attempt to keep the genre alive just a little bit longer.
Second, and perhaps more importantly, 4D Man is saddled with what must surely be the most utterly inappropriate background music in the history of cinematic science fiction.
Worse still, there is no indication that any effort was made to match the mood of the soundtrack to the mood of the action to which it was set.

A meteor crashes in the woods a few miles away and an old man investigates the hole.
An orb-like piece of debris opens and the old man explores its contents.
Of course, the gooey blob attacks his hand and he runs away only to be picked up minutes later by the young couple.
