Topic: 4dwm

4dwm - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
4dwm is derived from the older mwm window manager and uses the Motif widget toolkit on top of the X Window System found on most Unix systems.
4dwm on IRIX was one of the first default graphical user interface desktops to be standard on a particular Unix computer system.
Other X window managers that mimic the 4dwm look and feel exist, such as "4dwm" for IceWM.

 SGI TPL View (4Dwm)
4Dwm has functions that facilitate control (by the user and the programmer) of elements of window states, such as placement, size, icon/normal display, and input-focus ownership.
The result is a 4Dwm menu that stays posted and does not respond to the pointer.
If 4Dwm is running with continuous session management, it is recommended that you either use the toolchest System->"System Shutdown" entry or quit 4Dwm before the shutdown/reboot.

The IMD project reproduces the 4Dwm desktop, as found on SGI's IRIX operating system, running under Linux.
4dwm was pretty cool, but is based on Motif, and is downright ugly compared to KDE/GNOME and practically all the other WMs out there.
Before I got to use OS X, I always considered IRIX and 4dwm to be by far the easiest to use Unix around.

Later on Xsession runs 4Dwm, Workspace, etc. and they inherit Xsession's environment including the environment variables which 'userenv' got from your shell's startup files.
However, 'userenv' objects to 1) errors in your shell startup files, 2) commands which print output to the terminal and 3) commands like 'stty' and 'tset', which expect to be connected to a terminal.

Date: 07 May 93 00:00:01 EST This multiple window manager problem is usually triggered by the "kill" feedback of the window manager when a user logs out.
The "kill" feedback is controlled by the resource "showFeedback." For 4Dwm, this resource is defined in /usr/lib/X11/app-defaults/4DWm as: *showFeedback: behavior restart quit kill Modify the resource to read: *showFeedback: behavior restart quit For mwm, set a "showFeedback" resource that does not include the "kill" feedback in /usr/lib/X11/app-defaults/Mwm.

Using other window managers on the SGIs   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Running ctwm with 6 desks requires a little over 4.5 megs of memory, fvwm2 with 9 takes a bit less than 5.5 megs, and 4Dwm with 4 desks needs over 13 megs.
Several people who have switched from 4Dwm to one of the others have noticed that just about everthing that involves manipulating a window (moving, re-drawing, etc.) seems much faster under both of the other two window managers.
They also allow you to do things like windowshade a window (roll up the window so that all that is visible is the title bar), and are more easily customized than 4Dwm.

 Daylight Software Release 4.61
Background: A bug in the IRIX X Window system combined with bad habits in Sun's XView code caused the IRIX window system to "lock up" when Daylight applications were run.
In addition, many of the default options (such as fonts, and graphics parameters) had to be changed for optimum performance when running under SGI's default window manager "4dwm".
To solve this, Daylight supplies a set of "wrapper" scripts, "xvmerlin4d", "xvthor4d", and "xvpcmodels4d", that invokes XView programs with parameters appropriate for use with IRIX X-servers and the 4dwm window manager.

Most CDF systems run the 4Dwm window manager, an SGI enhanced version of the motif-based window manager Mwm (see the man pages for 4Dwm, mwm and x for the precise syntax and X resources available).
