4ZZZ - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
4ZZZ (pronounced "Four Triple Zed" or simply "Triple Zed") is an independent community radio station operating in Brisbane, Australia, at the frequency 102.1 FM.
When the licence was granted 4ZZZ was ready to commence broadcasting from Mt Coot-tha to the greater Brisbane area because station volunteers had built a transmitter hut and mast there prior to the station being granted the licence.
On 14 December 1988, 4ZZZ was taken off air and forcibly evicted from its University of Queensland premises by the then student union executive.

 4ZzZ
The 4ZZZ library is a goldmine of awesome music, each week around 60 new releases come into the 4ZZZ library - 60 % of these are local and Australian releases.
Decision making at 4ZZZ is made through the collective, which meets the first Tuesday of every month at 6:00pm at the station (291 St Paul's Tce, Fortitude Valley).
Because 4ZzZ held the rights to the name Hot 100, there was a little bit of legal biffo when TripleJ became a national broadcaster, so they changed the name of their survey the "Hottest 100".

 CBOnline - Oppression Breeds Creativity
Hamstrung by similar limits on civil liberties as their Brisbane counterparts, they established two pirate radio stations, which were largely a token gesture of opposition to the war and could only be heard through part of the city.
Coinciding with those early meetings to develop 4ZZZ, several interest groups around the country had mobilised to challenge the duopoly on the airwaves that had existed since the 1930s.
4ZZZ also became aligned with the commercial manufacturers of stereo equipment that were also pushing for the introduction of FM.

Since 1975 when 4ZZZ began broadcasting in Brisbane the radio station has irregularly issued a magazine called Radio Times to its subscribers.
Each magazine was quite distinct and reflected the particular eccentricities of the editors, Queensland politics and the radio station.
Some were printed in formats difficult to reproduce (or scan), access to some issues is limited and more recent issues have been published since the station's move to Fortitude Valley.

 The Media Report: 23 November  2000  - 4ZZZ's 25th Anniversary
I spoke to many different workers who've contributed to 4ZZZ over the past 25 years, but today, here's four voices from the '70s and '80s.
Jim Beetson: It was assumed that the station should strive for excellence, a term not used in those days but certainly underpinned everyone's thought that we really believed that commercial radio was doing such a shoddy job, we should reasonably expect to get a very big audience.
Ident: Triple-Z. Marion Wilkinson: At the time I thought we had zero influence if you like, in the mainstream, and I was always surprised later at how much of it managed to seep out first I think into the other media and then from the media into the mainstream.
