The 4th Infantry Division was scheduled to take part in the Iraq War in the spring of 2003 by spearheading an advance from Turkey into northern Iraq.
The 4th was unable to deploy in time to take part in the invasion but arrived as follow-on forces and have been a major part of occupation forces during the post-war period.

The 4th Battalion, 42nd Field Artillery Regiment, was originally constituted on 5 July 1918 in the National Army as Battery D, 42d Field Artillery, an element of the 14th Division.
Former Battery D, 42d Field Artillery, was reconstituted on 1 April 1957 in the Regular Army and redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 4th Battalion, 42d Artillery.
It was redesignated on 23 April 1959 as Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 4th Howitzer Battalion, 42d Artillery, and assigned to the 4th Infantry Division (organic elements concurrently constituted).

In 1957, HHB, 1st Battalion (Bn), 15th Field Artillery, was reorganized to form the 7th Bn, 15th Artillery (Arty).
During the Battalion’s four years and four months in Vietnam, the Indianheads of the Fighting Fifteenth fired over 360,000 rounds of deadly and accurate Heavy Artillery fire, were credited with 850 enemy Killed By Artillery (KBA), destroyed over 1,200 reinforced bunkers, and destroyed numerous other hard targets.
