The Royal Dragoon Guards was formed on 1 August 1992, as a result of the amalgamation of the 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards and the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards.
The Royal Dragoon Guards now carries with it the traditions and history of four of the finest Regiments of the British Cavalry, the 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards, the 5th Dragoon Guards, the 7th Dragoon Guards and the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons.
The 4th Royal Irish were combined with the 7th (Princess Royal's) Dragoon Guards to form the 4th/7th Dragoon Guards, while the 5th and 6th amalgamated to form, initially the 5th/6th Dragoons, but in 1927 this was changed to the 5th Inniskilling Dragoon Guards.

The Royal Dragoon Guards is an armoured regiment of the British Army.
Because of its lineage through the 5th Royal Iniskillings and the 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards -- the 4th had been known as the 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards and the 7th also had Irish ancestry -- the RDG is thus Northern Ireland's cavalry regiment.
The Regiment was based in Paderborn, Germany when it was formed, and was part of 20 Armoured Brigade.

Patrick Sarsfield, the Jacobite Earl of Lucan, who was in command of the remnants of the Jacobite Irish army after the surrender at Limerick.
He was struck by a bullet in the chest and taken to the town of Huy, about twenty miles away, where he died three days later.

The day before The Battle of Mons which took place on the 23rd August 1914, the 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards, part of the British Expeditionary Force, were the first of the British forces to make contact with the Germans.
They were spotted by the British and turned around to make a hasty retreat chased by the 1st Troop under Captain Hornby and the 4th Troop.
The first soldier to open fire on the Germans was Corporal E.Thomas with Private Ernest Ridley No.7368 at his side when they were near to the chateau of Ghislain.

Irish Lodges were warranted in many "British" Regiments, though often mainly manned by Irishmen.
The Ist Irish or Blue Horse, later the 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards had its Warrant issued by Grand Lodge on 24th June, 1758.
This Warrant is still held in the 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards and the Lodge is working in West Germany, where the Regiment is stationed as part of the NATO Defence Forces.
