The present 2 Royal Tank Regiments are the direct descendants of the Armd car engineers of 1914, the Naval Brigade and the RNAS Sqn which augmented the British Expeditionary Force for the defence of Antwerp in August of that year.
In 1971, 1 RTR was the last of the Armoured Regiments to be re-equipped with the Chieftain Tank.
The regiment was by this time highly regarded throughout the army as a Recce Regiment that 'knew it's stuff', so logically (this is British logic of course) we were informed that we would be replaced by 13/18th Royal Hussars and move to Bovington and assume the role of RAC Centre Regiment.

Battalion, Royal Tank Corps, the Battalion moved to Lydd in Kent where it remained until the outbreak of the Second World War; the Regiment in the was remarkable.
The Regiment was centrally located in the Ledra Palace Hotel with many troops permanently based in outstations along the border between the Greek Cypriots to the south and the Turks to the north.
When the Tank Corps reformed at Bovington and Wareham in 1919, the arm badge was taken into general use by all officers and men and is believed to be the only badge of its kind which survived the years of the First World War and was continued in use as part of a peacetime uniform.

 The New Scottish Regiment
This Regiment was a result of the merger of the Highland Light Infantry (City of Glasgow Regiment) and the Royal Scots Fusiliers, in 1959 to form The Royal Highland Fusiliers.
Therefore this regiment is fairly new in the British Army establishment, and became the Fourth Regiment of Foot Guards.
Each of the Scottish Regiments as well as the Scots Guards have a history of tunes that are particular to their regiment, as well as common and shared tunes There will be a great deal of pressure on the Pipe Major to retain the individual regiment tunes and incorporate them into the new regiment.

Captain Philip Gardner was serving with the 4th Royal Tank Regiment in 32nd Tank Brigade in the Western Desert at the time of the British "Crusader" offensive, in the autumn of 1941, designed to destroy the bulk of Rommel's armour and force him to abandon his siege of the port of Tobruk.
Ordering the second tank to make a wide circuit to the left, he ran his tank up to the nearer of the stricken vehicles while his accompanying tank manoeuvred and kept up sustained fire on the enemy position.
The one stowed along the side of his tank was jammed, so he loosened the one at the rear and signalled his driver to turn about.

 The Royal Tank Regiment
The present Royal Tank Regiment, composed of two regular regiments, is the direct heir to the original armoured car pioneers of 1914, the Naval Brigade and the RNAS squadron which augmented the British Expeditionary Forces for the defence of Antwerp in August of that year.
The 2nd Royal Tank Regiment is currently based in NW Germany just north of Hannover in the sleepy village of Fallingbostel which was once home for an SS barracks.
A composite squadron was formed by the 2nd and 5th Royal Tank Regiments and covered the 400 mile withdrawal to Cherbourg, while the main body of the Second left Brest by ship for England on 16 June 1940.

On the Somme on 15th September 1916, C Company (later 3rd Royal Tank Regiment) and D Company, Heavy Section, Machine Gun Corps were the first troops to man tanks in action anywhere in the World.
From 1924 the 4th were affiliated with the Lothian and Border Horse, Territorial Army, and continued the association with the Queen's Own Lowland Yeomanry until its disbandment in 1966.
Between 1957 and 1993 the Regiment recruited mainly in Scotland and the 1st Royal Tank Regiment continue to recruit there as well as its own recruiting area of Liverpool.
