Fourth-generation programming language - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Such languages arose after the introduction of modern, block-structured third-generation programming languages, which improved the process of software development.
Nevertheless, the great majority of 4GL users would describe themselves as programmers and most 4GLs allowed for (or required) system logic to be written in a proprietary macro language or a 3GL.
Report generators take a description of the data format and the report to generate and from that they either generate the required report directly or they generate a program to generate the report.

 Fourth Generation Language
It's the latest generation of languages, which began with 1 GL (first-generation language) in the 1950s.
Assembler language was in wide use by the late 1 950s and continued in very heavy use until the late 1 960s.
The comparison of 4GL vs. 3GL is not a case of one type of language being superior to another.

It is a mainframe language; yes, a programming language for old IBM mainframes that run old Operating System like MVS, VM or VSE; is a language that run on a 370/390 environment, on machines that today only a big company or organization owns.
Hilmas is not a 4th generation language, is only a procedural language, and not so self explaining like BASIC or REXX, or so well structured as PASCAL; it not obey at any known standard: is a new language born to satisfy my professional needs of a System Programmer in mainframe environment.
His goal is to be flexible as C language or more, without to be bounded by run-time libraries of any kind; it is quite easy to be learned in short time and simple enough to do programs quickly (and, if you want, dirty).

FOURTH GENERATION LANGUAGE - Definition   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
The term was invented by Jim Martin to refer to non-procedural high level languages built around database systems.
The first three generations were developed fairly quickly, but it was still frustrating, slow, and error prone to program computers, leading to the first "programming crisis", in which the amount of work that might be assigned to programmers greatly exceeded the amount of programmer time available to do it.
Thus were born report-generator languages, which were fed a description of the data format and the report to generate and turned that into a COBOL (or other language) program which actually contained the commands to read and process the data and place the results on the page.

 Falcon Language - Home
The Falcon Programming Language is a generic purpose untyped 4th generation language, based on a Virtual Machine executing portable pseudo codes (a class of languages nowdays known as Scripting Languages, and counting Python, PERL, PHP, Ruby and LUA among them), completely written in C++.
For a programming language to be useful, its first requirement is that the grammar through which it can be expressed comes natural for the users, easy to learn and to read.
The fact that Falcon were thought to be an application driver scripting language as well as a stand-alone language leaded to the development of a very simple and natural API for embedding application, where they can control every aspect of the Falcon program execution with simple implementation choices.

The B34S Matrix Language design allows DO loops and IF structures to be in the command stream provided the commands are not given in manual mode.
General purpose routines, such CFREQ which will calculate a cumulative frequency distribution, are documented BOTH in the TOOLKIT section which lists all routines and under the matrix command subroutine list.

Although originally designed as a systems programming language, C has proved to be a powerful and flexible language that can be used for a variety of applications, from business programs to engineering.
C is a particularly popular language for personal computer programmers because it is relatively small -- it requires less memory than other languages.
Although it is a high-level language, C is much closer to assembly language than are most other high-level languages.
