5.56 x 45 mm NATO - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In light of experiences with the M14 rifle and the 7.62 mm cartridge, 5.56 mm amunition was introduced for use in the American M16 rifle in the 1960s.
Of the cartridges tendered the 5.56 mm was successful, but not the 5.56 loading as used by the US at that time, but the Belgian offer, the SS109 loading, with a heavier bullet at a lower muzzle velocity for better long-range performance.
Many nations and weapons use the 5.56 mm NATO cartridge.

6.8x43mm SPC Rifles - Tactical Forums
While the 5.56 mm BH 100 gr OTM load offers impressive terminal performance, it’s external ballistics are not ideal; the 5.56 mm 75/77 gr OTM’s are more versatile and a better overall choice for most end-users.
In general, the military use of OTM projectiles in 5.56 mm, 6.8 mm, 7.62 mm/.308, and.300 Win Mag has been declared to be consistent with the international law obligations of the United States, including the law of war.
I do seem to recall seeing something (I do not remember where) that the 115 gr 6.8 mm bullet was selected over a somewhat heavier one because of a desire to flatten the trajectory out to 300 meters (presumably for rapidly engaging targets without having to make large sight picture changes).

It would seem that little further could be done to improve the 5.56 mm round, since 5.56 mm is too small to reduce its caliber further to give a saboted round, except perhaps to single flechette, and as yet flechette rifle rounds have all been abandoned as unseccessful.

With the INSAS 5.56 mm caliber already in use in Kashmir, the TAVOR (with Same caliber) purchase seems to be redundant especially when the INSAS is being produced as a rifle as well as a carbine.
Army sources said that while special forces had already been equipped with American and Israeli weaponry, New Delhi is considering purchase of several thousand more Tavors to equip the entire counter-insurgency forces operating in Jammu and Kashmir, who are currently armed with AK-47 rifles imported earlier from Romania.
The INSAS is seen as suitable for a convenional war of maneuver (say, with Pakistan) in which logistics would be a concern, but not for close combat with militants in Kashmir which requires heavy firepower without taxing logistical lines.

During the years just prior to World War II, the Imperial Japanese Army replaced their 6.5mm (.256 Caliber) rifle ammuni- tion with a 7.7mm (.303 Caliber) cartridge due to the smaller round's poor lethality and its inability to penetrate barriers and effectively stop enemy troops.

Re: 6.8 mm for the M16
Im wondering if there is a sane and reasonable way to calculate how long a small caliber (5.56 would be nice) can be before it becomes impractical to impart enough spin without chewing off the projectile's steel jacket, ripping out the rifling or other wise doing damage with the high velocities that are needed.
When you consider the fact that the current "shorter" bullet is pretty marginally stabilized (absolutely intentional by the way), a longer projectile would obviously require more spin.
The point is, "How close is the current round to such a limit, should that limit exist?" Regards bk
