Blu-ray Review: 50 First Dates | High Def Digest
So that makes it a bit of a shame that they picked '50 First Dates' as their follow-up vehicle to 'The Wedding Singer,' because even a couple as charming as them can't save a pedestrian, derivative script.
Note that like all of Sony's other Blu-ray titles, '50 First Dates' features the "Seamless Menu Navigation" feature, which is the much-touted ability of both of the next-gen HD formats to allow users to access a disc's extras in real-time, while the movie is playing and without interrupting playback.
Of course, '50 First Dates' is not exactly the A-list title that will get mainstream consumers to jump onboard the Blu-ray love train, but it does prove the format can deliver on the bottom line.

DVD Verdict Review - 50 First Dates
Henry falls in love, and at first it's just a game, a variation on his dating modus operandi; Lucy doesn't remember from day to day, so he doesn't have to lie—all he has to do is have her like him for just one day, then he can start all over.
In the Sandler oeuvre, 50 First Dates is probably the least typical of his films next to Punch-Drunk Love, and that's a good thing—it's probably the most enjoyable film he's been in since Billy Madison.
50 First Dates is a good sign that his career is maturing and that he'll have longevity as a romcom lead and expand his fanbase outside teenage males (whether they be "teenage" in years or temperament).

50 First Dates is a 2004 romantic comedy starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore and directed by Peter Segal.
Lucy is smart enough to consider this question herself, and after several days of romance ("There's nothing like a first kiss", spoken by her three successive times on three successive days), she shows up at the aquarium with startling news: she has been keeping a scrapbook ever since Henry made the home movie.
One notable coincidence of Henry's first video is when the screen says "Red Sox Win World Series" and then follows with "Just Kidding." This is a reference to the 2003 American League Championship Series, as the film was released in February 2004.

Maybe '50 First Dates' is not shot-for-shot true reference material, but it does bode well for future Blu-ray releases.
Sony presents '50 First Dates' in uncompressed PCM 5.1 surround (a Dolby Digital 5.1 option is also included), and it is a bit better than the plain Dolby track on the standard DVD release.
Though, admittedly, none of the extras on '50 First Dates' were tremendously exciting the first time around, it is still a shame we don't get the complete package here.

More alarming, however, is the fact that Dates is yet another offering to the increasingly alarming stockpile of American entertainment products which revolve around memory loss and manipulation (The Butterfly Effect, Paycheck, Alias, and the upcoming Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind).
Dates is way closer to a being a post-There's Something About Mary Farrelly brothers movie than Sandler's typical fare, right down to using freakishly odd locals, making its talent look extra-goofy, and shoving a saccharine ending down our throats even though we just want to see more people hit with baseball bats.
Parts of Dates, especially when we see the painstaking lives the Whitmores lead in an attempt to keep Lucy's illness from her, are almost downright touching, though I think that has a lot to do with the context of the film.

 BBC - Films - 50 First Dates
It's implausible, obviously, but this is entertainment not education and the spark between the stars and a surprisingly thoughtful screenplay ensures that, despite the odd gross-out misstep, this is a sweet, warm and funny romantic comedy.
The first 20 minutes promise a harsher, thicker picture than 50 First Dates becomes, with Sandler's androgynous co-worker (Lusia Strus) and roguish best friend (Rob Schneider) tools for broad, boring comedy (a vomiting walrus; base sexual innuendo).
Sure, 50 First Dates has the superficial ickiness we expect from Sandler, but underneath it has heart.

“50 First Dates” is what the disillusioned bystanders have been waiting for: it’s mostly a gentle, intelligent romantic comedy that reunites Sandler with his “Wedding Singer” costar, Drew Barrymore.
We first hear of Henry Roth, Sandler’s character, before we meet him through a few lines of praise from a variety of gorgeous tourists now back home after a, well, stimulating vacation in Oahu.
The screenplay by George Wing is inventive in providing Henry many ways of encountering Lucy for the first time again, and very adept in showing how all this changes Henry into a better person, without his even noticing.

Rolling Stone : 50 First Dates : Review
50 First Dates rolls unapologetically off the Adam Sandler assembly line -- another farce high on silliness, sentiment, dick jokes, vomit (a walrus blows lunch) and a crazylove for grossouts that is too sincere to be faked.
He’s a bit more adventurous in 50 First Dates, directed by Anger’s Peter Segal, which shows savvy in stealing from 1993’s Groundhog Day in which the great Bill Murray played a smartass weatherman forced to relive the same day again and again until he made Andie MacDowell fall in love with him.

SPLICEDwire | "50 First Dates" movie review (2004) "50 First Dates" review, Peter Segal, Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore
But with the couple's meet-cute in a rusty, tin-roofed cafe (absentmindedly playing with her knife, she glints sunshine into his eyes), "Dates" hits its stride with Sandler wracking his brain for new and comical ways to make her fall in love with him day in, day out.
The movie is at its funniest on the days when Sandler strikes out (there aren't enough of these scenes) and at its most affable after he convinces Barrymore's over-protective family to let him try to jog her routine repeatedly in the hopes of making her remember him.
But "50 First Dates" never tries to wiggle out of its memory-loss plot, even when searching for a happy ending, and because it remains true to its characters, the movie overcomes its faults with good humor (after the tactless first act anyway) and genuinely appealing performances (it's certainly the most likable Sandler's ever been).
