		Of course, 500 kHz was the frequency used by the RMS Titanic on April 15, 1912.
		Since 1912, 500 kHz has been used by thousands of merchant ships to signal their plight in times of peace and war.
		Whilst official operation on 500 kHz has been discontinued since 1999, the frequency is still designated as a distress channel in the International Radio Regulations.

		It is fitting that 500 kHz be preserved as a 'radio spectrum national park' to commemorate those who paid the supreme sacrifice in its use.

		The rest of the US is waiting to see what happens; however, the trend is currently leaning toward the 1.7 MHz split with most of the states who are members of MACC moving to it by sometime in the year 2000 (and that is NOT that far away!).
		Those using 500 kHz splits in the 51-54 MHz range are: California Florida* Michigan Nevada* Pennsylvania* Note-those states with (*) also have -1MHz splits on the air currently.
		This would happen in the 500 kHz split where the user’s radio would have to cover from 51 to 53.5 MHz on transmit and 51.5 to 54 MHz on receive (Let me not forget to mention the simplex channels are all scattered throughout the three 1 MHz segments).

	Ireland seeks allocation in the 500 kHz region
		The Irish Radio Transmitters Society recently submitted a proposal to ComReg (Ireland's regulator) for a small allocation to amateur radio experimenters in the region of 500 kHz.
		The Ofcom report also indicates that an allocation to the amateur radio service in the vicinity of 500 kHz would be worthy of consideration.
		The proposal made by the IRTS is similar to one being considered by Ofcom, which was made to it by the RSGB.

		After the war, shipping tended to move to the the HF marine bands for longer range communications, and the 100-150 kHz band was taken over for mainly fleet broadcasts for surface navies, and marine weather broadcasts.
		The concept of utilizing the long range ground wave propagation occuring on 100 kHz and below for over-the-horizon oceanic navigation lead ultimately to the development of two major systems: OMEGA and LORAN C. Omega was based on using the frequencies between 10-15 kHz from 8 transmitters scattered around the world, providing a global navigation fix.
		Another concept being advanced is to turn 500 kHz into an amateur frequency, due to its historical role as the morse code SOS frequency for ships for almost 100 years.
