501 Queen (TTC) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 501 Queen is an east-west streetcar route in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, operated by the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC).
The 501 Queen is one of two routes (the other is the 511 Bathurst) regularly operated with the TTC's double-length ALRV streetcars.
By the time the TTC returned to the idea of an east-west line, however, traffic had moved north to Bloor Street, and the Bloor-Danforth line was built there as a dedicated rapid-transit line like that under Yonge.

Queen (TTC) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Queen is a station on the Yonge-University-Spadina line of the Toronto subway.
Early subway expansion plans called for an east-west subway for streetcars under Queen Street, and a lower Queen station for these was roughed in under the subway station.
Priorities changed and the line was never built, but many people unknowingly pass through this lower station every day; the tunnels that go under the station so that riders can move between northbound and southbound platforms use portions of this intended station, with most of the excess infrastructure walled off.

Yonge-University-Spadina (TTC) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is also numbered as Route 1 (formerly route 601), but its route number is used by the TTC predominantly for internal purposes and is rarely used by the public or on TTC maps.
This line is expected to see the next major phase of expansion: the "Spadina North" extension, which will bring the line to York University, four kilometres (with four additional stations) northwest of Downsview station, and into the city of Vaughan to the proposed Vaughan Corporate Centre.
George stations, it turns south again under Queen's Park, passing to one side of the legislature, and running the full length of University Avenue beyond.

In the TTC survey, the effects of the various individual small delays along the route were clearly evident.
TTC staff request turn restrictions to avoid the continuing deterioration of the quality of service on streetcar routes due to the cumulative effect of such “small” delays over the length of the route.

The Queen streetcar is prone to delays and bunching - even though the headways (relative to other TTC streetcar routes) are wide.

Queen Street West describes both the western branch of Queen Street, a major east-west thoroughfare, and a series of neighbourhoods or commercial districts, situated west of Yonge Street in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Queen Street was the cartographical baseline for the original east-west avenues of Toronto's grid pattern of major streets.
In the 1960s, the TTC decided that a subway to replace the crowded Bloor Street streetcars would be more valuable, as after the construction of the Yonge line most of the passenger traffic had moved north with the subway.

As a result, the TTC is faced with several options, such as rebuilding the line to allow for a more common vehicle to be used, commissioning the design of a new vehicle, or replacing it with a subway, BRT or other method of high-capacity transit system.
The TTC has budgeted $705 million for this project, so it appears to be a good deal, made possible by the fact that the cars would be built in China.
On the other hand, if the TTC were to purchase an off-the-shelf model, it is likely that the company would have already paid off the tooling and design costs from their previous orders. However, the bulk discounts would still apply as a sales incentive.

In discussing the TTC’s proposal for multiple-unit operation, transit activist Steve Munro notes that coupling two streetcars together as a means of improving a line’s reliability only works when headways on that line are very tight.
I also pointed out that if the TTC wanted to speed service on Spadina, they should read the riot act to the transporation engineers who refuse to activate the transit priority signals on much of that route.
TTC staff agreed, but I doubt anything will happen until someone in a senior position like the Mayor starts taking this seriously.
