Preceding the exercise, on 10 June 1943, the 506th Parachute Infantry was attached to the division.
On 8 June elements of the 501st and 506th Parachute Infantry, along with the 1st Battalion, 401st Glider Infantry, engaged a German force in the town of St. Côme-du-Mont. The 3d Battalion, 501st PIR, took positions south of the town, along the highway to Carentan where it encountered the enemy.
Elements of the 506th managed to cross the river, neutralizing the enemy force that had destroyed the bridge, and a footbridge was improvised to allow the remainder of the 506th to cross.

The 506th PIR was attached to the 101st Airborne Division on 1 June 1943.
After participating in the maneuvers, the 506th moved to Fort Bragg, NC until the end of August 1943 when the unit reported to Camp Shanks, NY to prepare to be transported overseas.

CAMP TOCCOA, GA Item Co was formed along with the rest of the 501st PIR in November 1942 at Camp Camp Toccoa, GA. The 501st PIR was moving into Taccoa as the 506th PIR was moving out to Ft. Benning to attend jump school.
The Tennessee Maneuvers not only served as a showcase for Item and all the 501st PIR it enabled the men and officers to come together as Battalions and as a Regiment in preparation for the movement overseas.
In January 1944 the 501st moved as a regiment to Camp Miles Standish in preparation to move overseas.

The 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment was activated on 20 July 1942 at Mount Currahee, Camp Toccoa, Georgia, as part of the newly formed 101st Airborne Division.
The Regiment went on to liberate the town of Eindhoven on 18 September, and aided in the withdrawal of the beleaguered British 1st Airborne from Arnhem on 7 October.
The Regiment participated in numerous actions during the period of Vietnamization; and in December 1971, the 506th redeployed to Fort Campbell and was deactivated in May 1984.

Six parachutes represent the fact that the 506th was the sixth parachute regiment constituted in the U.S. Army.
(Joe was later transferred to a special Army artist unit.) The design consists of a diving eagle in front of a parachute canopy and a pair of dice, showing a "5" and a "6" and connected with a large fl "0", signifying the 506 attacking from the sky.

 Medal of Honor Nominees on Film: Richard D. Winters
The mission of the two airborne divisions was to block German reenforcements from reaching the beachheads, and to secure the causeways that crossed the flood plains immediately inland from the amphibious landing zone of the 4th Infantry Division (which was under the field command of Brigadier General Theodore Roosevelt Jr.), codenamed Utah Beach.
Winters was nominated for the Medal of Honor for this action by the commander of the 506th Regiment, Colonel Robert F. Sink.
The authors also could not help noticing a number of parallels between Winters and Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, and between their respective units, Easy Company 506th Parachute Infantry of World War II and the 20th Maine Infantry of the Civil War.
