The Soviet North Front reorganized its forces at July 21 by transferring the 168th division and one regiment from the 71st division to the 23rd Army, which was responsible for defence of Karelian Isthmus.
The Soviet 168 Division, with a number of separate regiments and battalions, continued its retreat towards the shores of Lake Ladoga, with Finnish 2 Division pressing from the south-west and 19 Division from the north, while 7 Division continued its offensive against Sortavala.
In this last phase, the Soviets had six infantry divisions and a number of separate batallions and regiments defending Leningrad from the north, but all of them were at half strength due to the hard fighting with the Finns.

 Obituaries
The son of a commander in the Royal Navy, Charles Robert Burton was born on December 13 1942 and went to Millfield before joining the Royal Sussex Regiment.
He came out to start a business in South Africa and, after returning to London, enlisted as a Territorial in the SAS with Fiennes and Shepard as they were planning their expedition.
However, Burton was particularly delighted by a Jak cartoon in the London Evening Standard which showed "Twink", in her curlers, saying on the telephone that he would only sleep in a fridge.

When we attended the 50th airborne muster in Washington D.C., I happened to be with a bunch of troopers chatting with General Ryder, who had been the officer with the test platoon and he embraced McCullough with great affection as only two close war comrades do.
He was a treasure to our regiment and stated, on several occasions, the years he spent as a paratrooper were the most fulfilling in his illustrious career.
Both of these men are some of the stars of the regiment and their deeds are very moving.
