In 494 bc a secession of plebeian soldiers led to the institution of the tribuni plebis, who were elected annually as protectors of the plebeians; they had the power to veto the acts of patrician magistrates, and thus served as the leaders of the plebeians in the struggles with the patricians.
Between 201 and 196 bc the Celts of the Po Valley were subjugated, and their territory was Latinized, although they themselves were barred from acquiring Roman citizenship.

Roman Republic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The Roman Republic (Latin: Res Publica Romanorum) was the representative government of Rome and its territories from 510 BC until the establishment of the Roman Empire, sometimes placed at 44 BC (the year of Caesar's appointment as perpetual dictator) or, more commonly, 27 BC (the year that the Roman Senate granted Octavianus the title "Augustus").
One's class was fixed by birth rather than by wealth, and though patricians had in the early Republic monopolized all political offices and probably most of the wealth, there are always signs of wealthy plebeians in the historical record, and many patrician families had lost both wealth and any political influence by the later Republic.
By the 2nd century BC the classifications had meaning predominantly in religious functions — many priesthoods remained restricted to patricians.

During the last centuries of the nuragic civilisation, along the coast of the Island the Phoenicians founded their first colonies: Sulci, today's Sant'Antioco, Karalis on the site of the current capital of Sardinia, Nora and Bithia not far from Cagliari and Tharros in the Province of Oristano.
In about 510 BC, after various straggles, the Carthaginians managed to conquer Sardinia, setting up a complex defensive system in order to control the main means of communication between the coast and the inland areas and the places of particular economic interest.
In 238 BC Sardinia became a Roman province, and the new conquerors, in order to impose their rule had to face the hostility and the resistance of the Sardinian-Punic people, who continued their cultural traditions for a long time.
