Ferrari 512 is the name of several race and road cars built by Ferrari.
However, in the specific case of Le Mans racing cars, regulations in those days restricted maximum displacement to 5 litres (the Ferrari 512 race cars displaced 4993cc) so that the "512" designation should be interpreted as "5 litres/12 cylinders".
Ferrari used to race with Prototypes (see Ferrari P) until the rules were changed for 1968.

With the introduction of the 5–liter 512 BB engine, and with substantial encouragement from wealthy privateers who wanted to race a Ferrari GT car (and who were willing to pay $80,000 plus spares to own a Ferrari–built race car), Ferrari produced a series of 25 silhouette race cars based on the 512 BB.

Ferrari 512 BB LM Series 1
The first factory-made BB LM's were based on the 512, an initial batch of three cars being manufactured for 1978's Le Mans 24 Hour race.
The engines were producing a reliable 440bhp, exactly one hundred horses up on the production 512, this thanks primarily to high lift camshafts and a competition exhaust system, changes to the chassis focusing upon mild reinforcements.
Unlike later Series II and III LM's, the first batch of cars with their lightweight glassfibre opening panels retained Pininfarina's production-style bodywork, the most noticeable changes having been flared wheelarches, wider wheels, a roof mounted aerofoil and rear wings taken directly from Ferrari's 312 T2 Grand Prix car.
