52nd Street, properly West 52nd Street, is a cross street in Manhattan in the Broadway district known as Swing Street, "the street of jazz", "the street that never sleeps" or, simply, "the street".

Although musicians from all schools performed there, 52nd Street was central in the development of bebop.

52nd Street (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
52nd Street is the sixth studio album by Billy Joel, released in 1978.
The track "My Life" benefited from the exposure it received when producers of the situation comedy Bosom Buddies used the song (performed by a different singer) as its theme.
52nd Street also became, in 1982, the first album to ever be released on compact disc.

Billy Joel - 52nd Street - Stereo SACD CD review on AudioRevolution.com
As a stereo-only SACD release, 52nd Street is a remastered version of the original record with no hybrid layer, meaning it will play only a SACD player – it will not play on a CD-only player.
Perhaps that is because 52nd Street was one of the first stereo SACDs on the market, with a 1999 release date posted on the SACD.
The hit ballad of 52nd Street is “Honesty,” which does best on SACD because the higher resolution of the format serves as a better platform for reproducing the delicate intricacies of Joel’s piano.

Billy Joel : 52nd Street - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
Consequently, 52nd Street unintentionally embellishes the Broadway overtones of its predecessor, not only on a centerpiece like "Stiletto," but when he's rocking out on "Big Shot." That isn't necessarily bad, since Joel's strong suit turns out to be showmanship -- he dazzles with his melodic skills and his enthusiastic performances.
Song for song, 52nd Street might not be as strong as The Stranger, but there are no weak songs -- indeed, "Honesty," "My Life," "Until the Night," and the three mentioned above are among his best -- and they all flow together smoothly, thanks to Ramone's seamless production and Joel's melodic craftsmanship.
52nd Street is a testament to that achievement.

 Billy Joel - 52nd Street: Music-Hills.com
Following up his 1977 breakthrough smash The Stranger was no easy task for Billy Joel; 52nd Street shows he wasn't quite up to the challenge, though it sold similarly well and kept the momentum for his fast- track career until the more impressive Glass Houses appeared in 1980.
52nd Street is an even more mature sound than the sound captured on Stranger and demonstrates not just Joel's superb musicianship but his influence all musical genres including Jazz, broadway and The Beatles.
I would also like to let you know that the remasters of 52nd Street don't improve the sound at all, and I would really say that the sound is noticeably worse than the first issue from back in 1983.

West Philadelphia (52nd Street) Expressway (US 1, unbuilt)
From the 1960's through the mid-1970's, the Philadelphia City Planning Commission proposed a north-south expressway along 52nd Street from the Schuylkill Expressway south to the proposed Cobbs Creek Expressway (I-695).
The West Philadelphia Expressway, which probably would have carried the US 1 designation (since it was to be the southern continuation of the Roosevelt Expressway), was part of the proposed "five mile loop" comprised of a network of freeways five miles from Philadelphia City Hall.
In addition to the expressway at 52nd Street, the joint plan called for arterials at 30th Street, 38th Street and 48th Street, and for the closing of "non-vital" streets in overbuilt residential areas to allow for "greenways."

Marian McPartland | On 52nd Street
Just as interesting is the fact that “On 52nd Street” documents one of recording engineer wizard Rudy Van Gelder's earliest achievements in reproducing jazz as close as possible to its live performance sound, even with the crude equipment he must have worked with.
On “On 52nd Street,” McPartland seems to be of two minds: entertaining and breezy in front of a live audience as they clink drinks and clatter and chatter (thanks Rudy for minimizing that sound), and meditative and explorative in the studio where the last five tracks were recorded.
Savoy's "On 52nd Street" perhaps is even more significant because it includes two of McPartland's early bassists, Vinnie Burke and Bob Carter, who joined her group after the shakeout period involving her first accompanists, bassist Max Wayne and drummer Mel Zelnick.

 BILLY JOEL-52nd Street
Street went on to win the Grammy for Album of the Year.
The album gets off to a strong start with the raucous (if somewhat bombastic) “Big Shot.” This rocker tells the tale of an egomaniac whose insistence on being the life of the party leads her to engage in Bacchanalian excess, which ultimately proves too obnoxious for even her closest acquaintances to endure.
Street shows Billy Joel riding the wave of the strongest three-album stretch in his remarkable career (the other two being The Stranger and Glass Houses).

Upon arrival back in New York, men who had worked on The Street were looked up affiliations with other record companies, unavailability at the time of record dates, among other things, prohibited the appearance of some people that should have been part of this venture.
However, Scott managed to procure the services of some of the more significant figures of the 52nd Street era plus some of the better musicians that came along later on - a cross-section of "blowers": the traditional, the modern, and those who stand astride of the two stylistic poles.

Rolling Stone : Billy Joel: 52nd Street : Music Reviews
52nd Street, also produced by Ramone, is more rock-oriented than The Stranger and quite different in spirit.
Whereas The Stranger–particularly in its centerpiece, "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant"–captured the texture of urban neighborhood life in an Edward Hopper-like light, 52nd Street evokes the carnivalesque neon glare of nighttime Manhattan, using painterly strokes of jazz here and there to terrific effect.
The characters in Joel's new compositions–a Puerto Rican street punk ("Half a Mile Away"), a social climber ("Big Shot"), a sexual bitch ("Stiletto"), a barfly sports fan ("Zanzibar") and a Cuban guitarist ("Rosalinda's Eyes")–comprise a sidewalk portrait gallery of midtown hustlers and dreamers.
