  Walter Quintin Gresham, Major General, United States Army
Of English descent, Walter Quinton Gresham was born near the hamlet of Lanesville, Indiana, March 17, 1832.
In 1853, at the age of 21, Gresham was admitted to the bar and began practicing law in the office of Thomas Slaughter in Corydon.
In 1860, Walter Gresham was elected to the Indiana House of Representatives.

He was active as a campaign speaker for the Republican ticket in 1856, and in 1860 was elected to the Indiana House of Representatives as a Republican from a strong Democratic district.
In 1861, at the outbreak of the American Civil War, he became colonel of the 53rd Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and subsequently took part in Grant's Tennessee campaign of 1862, and First Battle of Corinth and Battle of Vicksburg, where he commanded a brigade.

In the latter part of the year it went in the same division to Mississippi, participating in the battles of the Vicksburg campaign and surrendering with the rest of that gallant garrison.
