The 53rd Battalion was raised in Egypt on 14 February 1916 as part of the “doubling” of the AIF.

On 31 July 1944, the entire regiment, reinforce by an infantry battalion, launched a counter-attack, to the east toward Niumen Creek, to relieve the pressure on the extreme southern flank and to secure a position from which the enemy could be enveloped and cut off.
The 124th Infantry (First Florida) was organized 1884-1892 in the Florida State Troops from new and existing companies as the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Battalions of Infantry with Headquarters at Jacksonville, Ocala, Pensacola, Gainesville, and Arcadia, respectively.
Assigned 5 April 1944 to the 31st Infantry Division and activated in Australia with personnel from the 154th Infantry (constituted and activated in 1942 in the Army of the United States).

Promoted to Generalmajor on the 16th of May 1903 he was appointed to command the 66th Infantry Brigade at Komorn (Komárom) within the 33rd Infantry Division of Feldmarschalleutnant Carl Edler von Rezniček.

The British 53rd (Welsh) Division was a Territorial Army division.
On March 26, 1917, the 53rd Division bore the brunt of the First Battle of Gaza where the three brigades, along with the 161st Brigade of the 54th Division, had to advance across exposed ground, withstanding shrapnel, machine gun and rifle fire, to capture the Turkish fortifications.
Despite gaining the advantage towards the end of the day, the British commander called off the attack so that the division's casualties, close to 3,500, were suffered in vain.
