Studio 54 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Studio 54 was operated by the flamboyant, openly gay, publicly visible Steve Rubell and retiring, straight silent partner Ian Schrager.
During its heyday it played a formative role in the growth of disco music and nightclub culture in general, and was one of the first nightclubs to blur the distinction between "straight" and "gay" nightlife.
The disco was depicted in the 1998 movie 54 and parodied in the 2002 movie Austin Powers in Goldmember as Studio 69.

 Qwipster's Movie Reviews - 54 review (1998)
Studio 54 was the hottest club in NYC during the late 70s disco era.
54 is a slice of life tale of a young and naive man's indoctrination into the decadent and drug-filled life as a bartender in the club where the stars would come from all over the world for one night in disco heaven...the place to see and be seen by the entertainment elite.
54 is worth watching for a fascinating look at the rise and fall of the disco empire, which was crushed under its own wild decadence, proving that for every binge there will always be a hangover.

But 54 seems a wasted opportunity, because, aside from a touching and risky performance by comedian Mike Myers as disco magnate Steve Rubell, there is practically nothing to the film.
The Studio 54 depicted in the film doesn't seem like much fun, the music isn't particularly loud or wonderful ("Where was Donna Summer or Gloria Gaynor?" a fellow moviegoer wondered while walking out) and Neve Campbell isn't even very fetching in her role as a Jersey-born soap opera star.
We were rewarded for not walking out, however; the most interesting part of the film was the fl and white photographs of the real Rubell (who died in 1989 at age 45) hanging out at the disco with various members of the glitterati that accompanied the closing credits.

 54 Movie Review
Like 'Boogie Nights', the protagonist in '54' is a teenager on the verge of becoming a man. Ryan Phillippe stars as Shane, a dreamer and decadent minded young 19 year old who lives two miles across the river from New York City in New Jersey.
'54' is a film that is high on the intimacy of its characters but short on plot substance.
As the closing credits of '54' come into focus, snapshots of the real Steve Rubell are shown with very famous VIP's who frequented his club which closed in 1986 and Rubell died in 1989, closing the book on a chapter of popular culture which takes its place in the history of the 20th century.

Cranky wishes he could say the same for 54, a remarkably lifeless story of a fictional Jersey dimwit (Ryan Phillippe), who tends bar at the center of the nightclub universe, his friend the coat check girl (Salma Hayek) who wants to be a singer and her drug dealing busboy husband (Breckin Meyer).
Problem is, the movie isn't so much about Studio as it is about the lower denizens of the club.
The movie is vaguely entertaining, but doesn't come close to getting across the scene that was in the Studio.

"54," which follows Whit Stillman's "The Last Days of Disco," is the second film to offer a behind-the-scenes view of the New York nightclub where disco and drugs infected celebrities with non-stop party fever.
Christopher's movie returns to 1979-80 and Studio 54 with Shane, a naive, curly haired New Jerseyite who is drawn to the neon lights of the big city.
"54" lacks the edgy creativity of "Boogie Nights" and the exuberance of the much better "Saturday Night Fever." It merely confirms that disco is a corpse.

Ryan Phillippe is the titular star of ''54,'' playing Shane, the Jersey kid who thinks he has become a star when he works his way up to bare-chested bartender at the celebrated late-'70s disco Studio 54.

Movie Reviews: 54 and Rounders -- The last days of independent cinema
Even the better low-budget movies this year demonstrate the notorious faults of Hollywood movies - unnecessary emphasis on the thriller aspects in Pi, and an almost total lack of characterization for the love interest in Buffalo '66 - and the latest two movies from Miramax are, simply, quite forgettable.
54 was originally supposed to be a chronicle of a downfall of Shane (Ryan Phillippe), a New Jersey teen, who comes to New York City, gets into the glitzy Studio 54, and then goes from visitor to busboy to bartender, while losing, step by step, his soul.
As a result, it comes as a crushing disappointment when, toward the end of the movie, this potentially fascinating plot is reduced to a mere convenient plot device, and Worm totally disappears for all of the last act.

According to the credits, the star of the movie is Ryan Phillippe, as Shane O’Shea, an ignorant New Jersey kid who lands a job at the disco where depraved or curious jet-setters (remember when there were jet-setters?) gathered to throw away money, take drugs and ogle ‘‘real’’ people like Shane.

Stalled somewhere between "Valley of the Dolls" and "Showgirls," but not half as much fun as either, "54" is a stiffly embalmed attempt at synthesizing an era via the drugged-out, disco-driven microcosm of New York's legendary melting pot (slag heap?) for the rich, beautiful and infamous.
With a subject this ripe for the picking, it's hard to believe that a duller job could be done chronicling the sex-drugs-disco orbit of the 1979-80 era, reduced here to a pretentious, disengaging muddle of stock characters and who-cares relationships.
Despite all the drugs, disco and sex in the balcony, the movie trades in nothing but one lifeless cliché after another as Shane finds his way back to reality about the time the bubble bursts and the Boogie Nights come to a close.

Avoid the frustration of expecting "Calle 54" to be a documentary, and just let the irresistible sounds of the Latin jazz greats sweep you away.
The strange thing about the Latin-music film "Calle 54" ("54th Street") is that you can find half a dozen things to complain about and yet enjoy every minute of the film completely.
But the movie does hint at some interesting points about this music — especially the implication that New York has become the world's premier meeting place for music from all over the Spanish-speaking world, from Spanish flamenco to Caribbean salsa.
